Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: Communicates with the general public, other City employees, and management to respond to questions regarding solid waste services and repairs. Prepares written daily reports, inputs production reports, prepares Fleet support service forms, accident/injury reports, and performance. Coordinates work activities with other City departments, other agencies, or contractors working in City right-of-way. Uses the two-way radio extensively to communicate directives and information. Instructs and trains personnel on new procedures, activities, and safety guidelines. Develops close working relationships with collections personnel to develop and enhance production levels and route standards. Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of solid waste collection. Supervises and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel. Outlines work assignments and prioritizes and assigns tasks to operators in a manner that ensures efficient and effective utilization of manpower and equipment. Prepares and updates pick up, delivery, and driver schedules. Facilitates the timely completion of daily assignments. Assists in the development of optimized routing and production. Learns job-related material through on-the-job training or in a classroom setting. Attends safety training course. Assist with managing Special Assistance programs, Adopt a Street program, Mulch program, and other additional events as needed.

Working Conditions
This position requires 100% on-site work. Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Must be available to work Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Must be available to work overtime as needed.

Minimum Essential Qualifications
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the equipment, tools, and materials used in the collection of refuse, and other solid waste; the occupation hazards and safety precautions of the work practices, techniques, equipment used for yard waste collection; knowledge of geographical locations within the city; knowledge of City policy and procedures. Knowledge of the principles and methods of workload scheduling and planning; the forms, procedures, and data collection requirements pertaining to accident investigations; the procedures for completing daily report forms, record of customer contact, and Fleet support maintenance forms; Solid Waste Department procedures and operational routines; purpose and proper use of safety equipment; principles and practices of employee safety training; procedures for identifying and disposing of hazardous chemicals/materials typically found in households; productivity measurements of collecting solid waste.

Skills/Abilities: Ability to supervise the work of subordinates; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees and the public; ability to do simple mathematical calculations, to operate hand tools, and pickup truck.
Physical Requirements: Constantly observes; frequently climbs, sorts, sits, walks, cleans, writes by hand, uses a calculator, twist body, stands, drive and files; infrequently crawls, squats, stoops, carries, drags, holds, lifts, pulls and pushes objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Reviews the work performance of others to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and ensures optimum production/customer service. Inspects, monitors, and evaluates landfills to determine compliance with prescribed operating and safety standards for disposing, or handling of solid waste to eliminate potential hazards.
Education/Experience: High school graduate or equivalent. Minimum three (3) years' experience in heavy equipment maintenance; minimum one (1) year of experience working with crews in a supervisory capacity.

This position requires 100% on-site work. Must possess a valid CDL with a good driving record. Other state valid Driver's License equivalent to Texas CDL with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver's license.
