Streets Maintenance Worker I, II or III

Schedule consists of four 10-hour shifts, 6:00am-4:30pm Monday - Thursday (Off Friday).

II - $22.68 - $32.34
III - $23.83 - $34.00
SUMMARY
Under immediate supervision, to perform a variety of apprentice level semi-skilled and skilled duties associated with the maintenance, repair, and construction of the city's transportation infrastructure. This position requires occasional emergency work outside of "regular" work hours - including nights, weekends and holidays. Work takes place in a variety of conditions ranging from mild to very hot conditions and inclement weather. This position includes outdoor physical labor and the use and operation of manual tools, light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Respond to emergency call out or overtime repair work and snow removal.
- Thorough knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Comply with OSHA standards and practices as they relate to the various aspects of the Streets Division.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in the maintenance of the city's road related infrastructure and solid waste administration and graffiti abatement.
- Operate a 10-wheel dump truck and a wide variety of power equipment which includes pre-trips and daily logs in accordance with City policy and CDL requirements.
- Haul materials such as asphalt, road base, topsoil, and large equipment to and from job sites.
- Participate and assist in snow removal using a variety of methods and equipment.
- Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes and regulations pertaining to this Division's programs and functions; including Bluestakes and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Maintain concise records and logs associated with tasks performed.
- Place traffic control and warning signs; serve as a flagger.
- Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles; operate heavy equipment including front end loader, backhoe, tandem axle dump truck, dozer, skid steer, hook lift truck, tanker/oil distributor, brine tank truck, concrete saw, asphalt zipper, mud-pumper and fork lift.
- Perform preventative maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Asphalt Assignment
- Pothole repair, utility restoration, milling and overlay entire streets, crack sealing, inspection, and special projects.
- Perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of components of the City streets; remove and replace road surface material and debris; load, transport, and unload stones, gravel, asphalt, supplies, and equipment as required.
- Fill, patch, and resurface holes, and cracks on City streets,
- Occasional utility repair restoration
- Sidewalk (including ADA ramps), curb and gutter installation and/or replacement, trip step removal by means of grinding or mud-pumping and special projects
- Break up and remove concrete or asphalt, build and set forms, place concrete for curbs, gutters, drains, culverts, sidewalks, and handicap ramps.
- Sign inspections and recording of data, sign repair/replacement and the installation of new signs.
- Maintenance, repair and replacement of traffic signs and road markings, including inspections and documentation
- Striping inspections, coordinating re-striping maintenance activity and executing work orders for new striping, monitoring contracted striping, removal and replacement of changes initiated by the city's Traffic Engineer.
- Graffiti abatement involving inspections of "hot spots", removing graffiti in accordance with the city's directive.
- Graffiti abatement using a variety of equipment and chemicals in accordance with the manufacture's recommendations.
- Solid Waste: maintaining the city's solid waste container inventory, including: unloading semi-trailers, repair and replacement of damaged solid waste containers in service, delivery and transport of city dumpsters.
- Handling work orders for delivery of containers to new homes and repairs and replacements to customers throughout the city. Coordinating with the solid waste collection contractor on the city's glass recycling containers and the quarterly e-waste and shred events. Maintaining the city's dumpsters and coordinating use of those dumpsters within the PW Department and special projects.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER I
Experience: One year of experience performing a variety of maintenance, repair, construction, and equipment operation work.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Utah Driver's License
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a Utah commercial driver's license within 12 months of employment in the position.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain Traffic Control Flagger, Trench Shoring, Confined Space, and Snow Removal Training certificates within 12 months of employment. (Additional time may be approved by Department Head due to testing restrictions.)
Experience: Two years of experience as a Street Maintenance Worker.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Utah Driver's License
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a Utah commercial driver's license within 12 months of employment in the position.
- Possession of LTAP Road Scholar certificate or equivalent. (Additional time may be approved by Department Head due to testing restrictions.)
Experience: Four years of experience as a Street Maintenance Worker.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Utah Driver's License
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a Utah commercial driver's license within 12 months of employment in the position.
- Possession of LTAP Road Master certificate or equivalent. (Additional time may be approved by Department Head due to testing restrictions.)
Knowledge of:
- The other sections of the Streets Division and Public Works as resources are apportioned across Streets Divisions and occasionally throughout Public Works Department as needed for special projects and circumstances.
- Preventative maintenance required for the vehicles, tools and equipment and equipment which will be operated and the ability to detect the need for, as well as make minor repairs and/or adjustments.
- Proper operational characteristics of light to heavy motorized equipment., including safe driving principles and practices.
- Materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in all aspects of local government street maintenance and repair.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary for street maintenance and construction.
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including Bluestakes and MUTCD.
- Operating a variety of street maintenance, repair, and construction equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner including manual tools.
- Performing heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
- Operating a motor vehicle safely.
- Operating the full range of equipment and tools used in street maintenance and repair in a safe and effective manner.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, Interpret plan and profile documents and schematics.
- Ability to clearly write various reports to track time, material, performance, etc. and perform arithmetic calculations.
- Interpret, and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to maintenance programs and functions.
- Apply knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the areas of street maintenance, repair, and construction.
- Safely operate equipment utilized in the Streets Division, including, but not limited to: a forklift, skid steer, loader and snow removal equipment.
- Work unconventional hours and be subject to 24-hour call as required for the City's snow removal program or emergency operations.
- Perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and tools.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city departments, public and private organizations and the general public.
- Perform street maintenance and repair with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs.; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for on-call, stand-by, and emergency call. Moderate-to-heavy physical activity. Difficult working positions. Required to stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Constant exposure to disagreeable elements such as extreme heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, airborne particles, and grease. Also, exposure to vehicular traffic while working in the public roadway. Potential occupational hazards due to exposures to heated asphalt, asphalt emulsion materials and compounds, and petroleum-based solvents and potentially explosive propane gas.
