Join Fairfax County's Wastewater Management team as an Industrial Electrician II at the award-winning Noman M. Cole Jr. Water Recycling Facility (67 MGD), where your expertise will help ensure the safe and reliable delivery of essential services to the community.

Under the general supervision of the Industrial Electrician Supervisor, and technical guidance of an Industrial Electrician III, the Industrial Electrician II performs skilled technical work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of industrial electrical systems. This includes medium and high voltage (480V to 34,500V) electrical distribution systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, programmable relays, and power monitoring/control equipment.

This position plays a critical role in supporting the uninterrupted operation of Fairfax County's wastewater infrastructure by:

  • Designing, installing, maintaining, and repairing complex industrial electrical equipment and systems.
  • Working in the field to diagnose and resolve electrical problems on a wide range of rotating, moving, and heavy equipment, including high-voltage distribution centers, motor controllers, pumps, generators, presses, lighting systems, and underground cables.
  • Troubleshooting, repairing, and installing VFDs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Performing diagnostic work up to the programmable logic controllers (PLC) and the digital control systems (DCS).
  • Conducting predictive and preventive maintenance in line with manufacturer's recommendations on electrical equipment.
  • Creating work orders and requisitioning equipment, materials, and parts as needed.
  • Performing all work in compliance with safety standards and regulations, participating in safety training, and promptly reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Subject to 24-hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime.

Note: Position works in the DPWES, Wastewater Treatment Division, located at 9399 Richmond Hwy. Lorton, Virginia.

Position may be underfilled as an Industrial Electrician I; the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.
Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or equivalent; successful completion of an approved electrician's apprentice program and four years of experience as an industrial electrician.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid driver's license.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Journeyman Electrician's license.
  • Confined Space Certification within 12 months of hire.
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Industrial Electrician I (Grade S18, $51,856 - $86,427). The employment standards for the Industrial Electrician I are: Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or equivalent; successful completion of an approved electrician's apprentice program; plus two years of experience as an industrial electrician. Upon completion of an underfill agreement (which will require that the employee meet the employment standards stated above in addition to obtaining competencies defined by the hiring agency) the employee will be elevated to the level of Industrial Electrician II. Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Industrial Electrician II within one year of the job announcement's closing date.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

Subject to 24-hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas. Ability to distinguish different color wiring.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One (1) year experience with preventive, corrective, and emergency repairs to industrial equipment in the most efficient and effective manner to reduce equipment downtime.
  • One (1) year of experience coordinating and collaborating with internal & external customers regarding the periodization in the repair effort.
  • One (1) year of experience performing inspections of industrial plant operating assets to ensure proper functioning.
  • Intermediate experience using Microsoft Suites applications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to climb up to 35 ft., on ladders and scaffolding. Ability to discern color. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 75 lbs. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to use hand tools. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures. Work requires entering confined spaces with weight restriction of 310 lbs. Work requires performing tasks in adverse weather conditions. Work requires performing tasks in an environment in which raw waste is present.
