Overview:
Spence seeks an Middle and Upper School Nurse to provide healthcare services and promote the health and well-being of the Spence community for Grades 5-12. The nurse will assess health needs, provide treatment as necessary, and collaborate with school faculty, administration, staff and students' families to support students' health and wellness. The Middle and Upper School nurse also works collaboratively with the Lower School Nurse and reports to the Director of Student and Family Support. This role ensures a safe and healthy school environment, enabling students to maximize their learning potential.
Responsibilities:
Health Services:
- Administers first aid, emergency, and preventive care to students in grades 5-12 and faculty/staff during the school day (between the hours of 7:45 am and 3:45 pm). This includes treating injuries and illness, and assessing the need for medical intervention.
- Administers prescribed medications to students in accordance with medical orders and school policies.
- Maintains first aid kits in the classrooms as well as portable first aid kits for field trips and off-campus experiences.
- Organizes access to preventive care (e.g. flu shots) to faculty and staff during the school year.
- Identifies health and safety concerns in the school community and promotes a safe and nurturing environment.
- Acts as a liaison between and resource to parents and school faculty to coordinate care specific to individual students and concerns about general health.
- Promotes health issues relevant to the Spence community.
- Provides health information that promotes enhanced school performance, informed health care decisions, and wellness and disease prevention. This includes communicating information that is mandated by the Department of Health.
- Collaborates with Facilities Management, Campus Safety, and Administration to ensure community safety.
- Collaborates with the Communications Department and Middle/Upper School Administration to ensure parent, faculty, and staff notification of outbreaks of communicable diseases.
- Communicates with faculty and staff about student allergies, medical issues, and medical accommodations and provides training as needed.
- Shares information regarding student injuries and other pertinent health issues affecting full participation in Physical Education and Athletics.
- Works collaboratively with middle and upper student support teams to identify students with physical and/or possible mental health issues.
- Is a member of the middle and upper school health teams.
- Maintains health records and forms for all students.
- Uses electronic medical records to document student visits and maintain a database to track annual physical forms according to middle and upper school policies and procedures.
- Manages exemptions from PE, Athletics, and use of stairs according to Middle and Upper School policies.
- Writes incident reports for students that nurses see and support faculty members, along with other response team members, to write clear incident reports.
Qualifications:
- New York State licensed Registered Nurse with sustained nursing experience in a school, pediatric, or emergency room setting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially in moments of high stress.
- Ability to hold confidential information and comply with HIPAA and FERPA laws.
- Understanding of adolescent development.
- Compassion, patience, empathy and clear boundaries when interacting with students and families.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of faculty and staff.
- Current knowledge of emergency practice including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of defibrillators (AEDs).
- Ability to network effectively with health and allied health professionals and organizations.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
