DEFINITION:
The Community Liaison Language Specialist I, under the supervision of the high school site
administrator, establishes and maintains communications in English and native language with
parents, and keeps parents informed of students' needs, academic progress, and cultural
adjustment regarding situations unique to young adults in the high school setting. Acts in a
liaison capacity between home, school, and community; facilitates home and community
understanding of school programs and objectives; secures parent involvement in school
activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Contacts parents to obtain information helpful in understanding student needs.
• Provides information to parents regarding school policies and programs.
• Makes referrals for students and their families to community agencies for a variety of
health and welfare services when needed.
• Assists parents with applications or community services when needed.
• Encourages parents to participate in workshops, meetings, and advisory committees.
• Translates for non-English speaking parents.
• Assists in the coordination and administration of English/designated language oral
and written language and native language tests to students.
• Uses native language to assist instructional personnel in communicating with students
and parents orally and in writing.
• Tutors students individually or in small groups to reinforce concepts introduced by
the classroom teacher.
• Assists in the establishment and maintenance of school site councils and District
bilingual committees.
• Assists with Special Education IEP meetings involving language minority students.
• Assists foreign students in adjusting to their new school environment.
• Performs related tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Community Service Agency and resources.
• Problems and concerns of families in the community.
• School objectives, programs and requirements.
• Cultural value system of language minority students.
• Correct foreign language usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
• General concepts of child growth and development.
• Techniques used in controlling and motivating students.
• Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• District policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
• Inform and reassure parents and encourage them to participate in school activities.
• Work independently without direct supervision.
• Communicate effectively in a specified foreign language.
• Learn and use basic instructional methods and procedures.
• Demonstrate understanding. Patience, warmth, and a receptive attitude toward
children of all ages and cultures.
• Understand and implement oral and written instructions.
• Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the
general public.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Observe health and safety regulations
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Training/Required Certification:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Three years experience in community services programs or related areas.
• College level courses in language, humanities and social science desirable.

The employee may occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds. Work conditions may include
exposure to fumes, dust, odors, cleaning agents and chemicals. Specific vision abilities required
by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to
adjust focus.
