Ideal candidate would be available for the following
12pm - 4:30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
Flexible based on staff and patient schedule Tuesday and Friday

This position will help support our new programing in Wausau and has opportunity to work hybrid in office and from home

The Recovery Peer Specialist provides patient-centered substance use disorder (SUD) support services within an interdisciplinary treatment team. This role supports patients' psychosocial, physical, intellectual, and spiritual recovery needs through individual and group interactions, care coordination, documentation, and community engagement. The Specialist applies knowledge of SUD treatment, recovery supports, and community-based resources to promote patient safety, dignity, accountability, and continuity of care.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Patient Care & Recovery Support
  • Provide SUD support services consistent with training, credentialing, and scope of practice.

  • Facilitate individual and group recovery-focused sessions.

  • Support patients in developing and completing Recovery Maintenance Plans.

  • Implement components of individualized treatment plans and reinforce program philosophy.

  • Monitor patient behavior, intervene as appropriate, and promote a safe, therapeutic environment.

  • Document patient progress, behaviors, and responses to interventions in a timely manner.

Care Coordination & Case Management
  • Serve as a case manager as assigned through the interdisciplinary team.

  • Coordinate discharge and continuing care planning in collaboration with therapists and team members.

  • Initiate and maintain collateral and community contacts to support ongoing recovery.

  • Educate patients on community supports, sponsorship, mentorship, and recovery resources.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Complete required clinical documentation (e.g., assessments, discharge paperwork, treatment plans) as assigned.

  • Collect and record data to support treatment planning and outcomes measurement.

  • Report suspected abuse or neglect per Wisconsin law and organizational policy.

  • Adhere to confidentiality standards (DHS 75, 42 CFR) and regulatory requirements.

Professional Collaboration & Program Support
  • Communicate effectively with team members regarding patient care, schedules, and incidents.

  • Attend clinical staffing, required meetings, and mandatory trainings.

  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives, committees, and organizational projects.

  • Promote department goals, organizational mission, and quality standards.

Operations & Safety
  • Transport patients as needed in accordance with policy.

  • Maintain a safe, orderly physical environment.

  • Follow all safety, infection control, and vehicle-use procedures.

  • Float to other programs, including adolescent services, as assigned.

Additional Job Description:

Education/Training Requirements:
  • A valid Wisconsin-Substance Abuse Counselor or Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC, CSAC) and in good standing with the state or application for credential within 90 days of hire.

  • A valid Certified Peer Specialist Certification (CPS)

  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification or American Red Cross Professional Rescue or certification to be obtained within 30 days of hire. Bi-annual re-certification is required.

  • Formal training in crisis prevention and crisis intervention is required within sixty (60) days of date of hire. Annual recertification is required.

  • First aid training is required within ninety (90) days of employment.

  • Must hold a current and active driver's license and be in good standing.

  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree or 5 years relevant experience.

  • Preferred to have a minimum of two (2) years serving persons with mental health and substance use disorders.
