Overview

As a valued member of the Community Development team, you will play a key role in ensuring the continued safety of our residents and business owners by inspecting existing buildings for Code violations.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect existing buildings for violations of property maintenance, fire, building, electrical, plumbing and zoning codes or ordinances in common areas of multiple dwelling properties, by appointment.
  • Inspect common areas of commercial and industrial properties for violations of Village Codes or ordinances.
  • Enter computerized reports of violations or deficiencies and send a copy to the property owner or agent.
  • Perform exterior inspections and follow up of foreclosed properties, in accordance with Department procedures.
  • Investigate complaints and inspect, on request, any area of a building and decide on the validity of Code violations.
  • Maintain records, take photographic evidence, and store it to the appropriate database.
  • Issue tickets to properties that are not in compliance and prepare the record for the hearing.
  • Stay current with other local property maintenance Codes to update the Village Code.
  • Answer phone inquiries, write reports, and document facts for property records.
  • Perform other work-related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Valid Drivers License.
  • High School Diploma/GED college-level coursework preferred.
  • Three years of experience in commercial or residential construction, building inspection, or related field.
  • Property Maintenance Inspector Certification through International Code Council (ICC) required within 6 months from date of hire.
  • Some knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and community relations and current trends in the field of community development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state, federal, and local housing codes, ordinances, and laws, as well as building construction methods and materials.
  • Considerable skill in dealing effectively with the general public and exercising tact and firmness when necessary.
  • Basic computer skills required, along with basic knowledge of personal electronic devices including, but not limited to, smartphones and tablets.
  • Must be able to keep accurate and neat records, and prepare reports.
  • Must follow all safety rules of the Village.
