General Summary

Perform specialized and complex procedures involved in Intraoperative Neuromonitoring to obtain data for use in the diagnosis of clinical disorders of the nervous system.

Work Performed (Responsibilities)Level I
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of multiple types of recordings and measurements of the electrical activity of the central and/or peripheral nervous system.

  • Apply extensive knowledge in anatomy and neurophysiology relative to the monitoring being performed.

  • Know and practice electrical safety relevant to equipment and type of monitoring performed.

  • Archive data.

Level II
  • Apply extensive knowledge in neuroanesthesia and its effect on neuromonitoring.

  • Know and apply current practices in neuromonitoring, maintained through extensive reading of published literature and practice standards.

  • Maintain continuing education requirements by ABRET to retain credentials.

  • Assess intraoperative procedures relative to orders for monitoring, taking action to address deviation from established practice protocols.

  • Perform duties according to established lab protocols for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative procedures.

  • Know and practice electrical safety relevant to equipment and type of monitoring performed.

  • Archive data.

  • Mentor IOM Trainee.

Level III
  • Apply extensive knowledge in neuroanesthesia and its effect on neuromonitoring.

  • Know and apply current practices in neuromonitoring, maintained through extensive reading of published literature and practice standards.

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities required for multi-modality monitoring.

  • Maintain continuing education requirements by ABRET to retain the CNIM credential.

  • Know and practice electrical safety relevant to equipment and type of monitoring performed.

  • Assess intraoperative procedures relative to orders for monitoring, taking action to address deviation from established practice protocols.

  • Archive data.

  • Develop lab protocols for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative procedures.

Level Characteristics
  • Level I (Trainee): Develops competency in and performs the basics of Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) testing and interventions under direct supervision. Requires 10 hours of CE and selects 2 choices for professional growth (e.g., member of national organization, committee work).

  • Level II (Non-Certified Technologist): Collects and analyzes (or oversees the collection/analysis of) multiple types of recordings and measurements. Can supervise an IONM Trainee. Requires 12 hours of CE and selects 3 choices for professional growth.

  • Level III (Certified Technologist): Collects and analyzes (or oversees the collection/analysis of) multiple types of recordings and measurements. Can supervise an IONM Trainee or Non-Certified Technologist. Requires 16 hours of CE and selects 4 choices for professional growth.

Minimum QualificationsEducation (All Levels)
  • Bachelor's degree in a biological science preferred OR

  • An Associate Degree in a biological science with an equivalent number of years of experience as a technician in a health care diagnostic procedure setting.

Experience
  • Level I:

    • With a Bachelor's Degree: No experience required.

    • With an Associate's Degree: 4 years of experience as a technician in a health care diagnostic procedure setting.

  • Level II:

    • 1 year of experience specifically in intraoperative neuromonitoring.

    • Proof of competency in modalities including: somatosensory evoked potentials, spontaneous and evoked electromyography, electroencephalography, and motor evoked potentials.

  • Level III:

    • 3 years of experience specifically in intraoperative neuromonitoring (with a minimum of two years as a non-certified IONM technologist and 6 months of IONM experience at Duke).

    • Proof of competency in all performed modalities, which may include: brainstem evoked potentials, monitoring deep brain stimulating electrode placement, brain function mapping, intracranial grid implantation, trans-cranial Doppler, trans-cranial motor evoked potentials, and direct stimulation of neural structures.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
  • Level I: None.

  • Level II: Registry in EEG or Registry in EP by ABRET, or RNCST, or RET (Canadian EEG registry) required.

  • Level III: Certification in neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring (CNIM) by ABRET required.
