Position Title: Certified Sterile Processing and OR Support Technician

Reports To: Operating Room Charge nurse/Coordinator and SPU Lead

Position Summary

The Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSPT) & OR Support Technician works as a team member and is responsible for providing support to the Surgery Center to ensure effective and efficient patient care and achievement of desired outcomes. The SPT collects, cleans, decontaminates, disinfects, and/or sterilizes surgical instruments, trays and packs, reusable medical devices, and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials and equipment. The Sterile Processing Technician understands microbiology and infection control standards. This position will assist in turning/cleaning OR rooms between cases as well as helping pick supplies for cases.

Position Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of reusable surgical instrumentation, micro surgical instrumentation, and power equipment
  • Knowledge and operation of sterile processing equipment including but not limited to washers, steam, gas, ultrasonic, and chemical sterilizers
  • Controls of all parts of the sterilization process including decontamination, prepping, packing, sterilization, and sterile storage
  • Provides integrity and sterility of products and services for ASC patients
  • Works in conjunction with management, OR staff and vendors to provide timely sterile products
  • Completes required monitoring and record keeping and maintains accurate sterilization records
  • Identifies instruments for all specialties and assures proper function. Follows protocol for repair or replacement of instruments as needed
  • Performs simple maintenance on equipment (i.e. clean filters and drain, refill chemicals)
  • Prepares trays for designated procedures according to policies and procedures
  • Documents and maintains inventory of supplies and materials
  • Requests replenishment for inventory, tools, equipment, chemicals, and any other items needed for proper and efficient functioning as needed
  • Monitors daily surgery schedules to identify and prioritize general, specific, and potential needs for all cases
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to all levels of required and recommended precautions including but not limited to Standard Precautions and Infection Prevention practices.
  • Understands and performs testing to include but not limited to daily, weekly, and monthly testing on equipment as required by the manufacturer and regulatory standards
  • Understands equipment set up, proper functioning and basic maintenance of chemicals and disposablesneeded
  • Adhere to guidelines for use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE),
  • Follow protocols for the decontamination and sterilization processes referencing Instructions for Use (IFU) supplied by the manufacturers
  • Adheres to safety standards and precautions as outlined by national, state, facility, and professional regulations
  • Conducts regular housekeeping of assigned areas
  • Assists with room turnover
  • Assists with patient positioning when appropriate
  • Conducts terminal cleaning of assigned areas, hallways, ORs, storage areas, and other areas as required
Other Responsibilities
  • Utilizes correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, equipment, and/or tables in order to prevent injury to patient, self, and personnel
  • Demonstrates knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies related to the operating environment
  • Assumes responsibility for learning new equipment and procedures and maintaining skills
  • Actively participates in sterilization areas, OR, and common surgical areas cleaning and housekeeping
  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility
  • Follows facility, OSHA, and AST safety rules and procedures
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of staff and patients
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations
  • Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities
  • Punctual and dependent for assigned and confirmed shifts
  • Always conducts self in a respectful and professional manner
  • Attends regular staff meetings, in-services, training, and other work-related requirements

Requirements

Position Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Possesses aptitude for maintaining pace of facility and patient flow
  • Must be able to provide proof of identity and the right to work in the United States
  • Thorough knowledge of surgical supplies, equipment, surgical supply chain, and policies and procedures
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with internal and external customers
  • Current Health care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Current national certification as an SPD Technician, Certified Registered Central Service Technician or Surgical Instrument Processor, and relevant experience with sterilizing instruments which qualifies the candidate for the national certification exam or certified registration.
  • One (1) year sterile processing experience
  • Possess mechanical aptitude with the ability to break down moving parts, clean, lubricate and reassemble, problem solve incomplete trays and missing instrumentation and have effective organizational, communication and human relation skills
  • Possess aptitude for maintaining pace of facility case flow
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write English fluently

Working Conditions

Sterile Processing Technicians spend a considerable amount of time walking, bending, stretching, and standing and must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury. Sterile Processing Technicians may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and biological agents to include, but not limited to: body fluids and wastes such as urine, blood, sputum, etc. The use of disinfecting and sterilizing agents may cause damage to skin and respiratory system.
