Qualifications

Required
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Four (4) years of experience in air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, commercial steam/hot water boiler repairs, and general HVAC cleaning and repair maintenance, some of which shall have been in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Possession of a valid EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery certification to include types I, II, and III.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices of the air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, commercial steam/hot water boiler, general HVAC maintenance trades, and of the properties, characteristics, and uses of related equipment, materials, and tools.
  • Skill in performance of the work and knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Ability to assign and supervise subordinate employees.
  • Ability to carry out a maintenance and repair activity within established policies, plans, and requirements and to coordinate work with other shops and departments.
  • Ability to instruct and train subordinates in all phases of work and to assist them with work problems.
  • Ability to enforce safety and other regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Ability to estimate costs of work performed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.
Preferred
  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level HVAC training program.
  • Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia master mechanical's license.


Major Duties/Essential Functions

  1. Provides day-to-day supervision and participation in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of commercial and residential single zone, multizone rooftop units, central air conditioning, heat pump systems, cleaning of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) units and boiler systems, and insulation repair and replacement, repair or installation of gas/oil-fired or electric commercial/residential type hot water/steam boilers, electrical heating units and related gravity/forced air systems for schools, offices, and centers.
  2. Abides by established policies, plans, methods, procedures, deadlines, and priorities.
  3. Plans and assumes responsibility for the efficient, timely, and economical accomplishment of assigned work and evaluation of staff.
  4. Sets priorities, deadlines, and sequence of approved work operations.
  5. Coordinates with personnel in other shops, organizations, and/or contracting firms, as required.
  6. Develops and delivers training to subordinates.
  7. Ensures that crews have proper and sufficient tools, supplies, and equipment to perform assigned tasks.
  8. Provides assistance when problems arise.
  9. Reviews work in progress for compliance with acceptable performance and safety standards.
  10. Prepares cost estimates and identifies needs.
  11. Keeps records.
  12. Recommends cost control methods to improve performance.
  13. Prepares and submits required or requested reports to include the status of work activities, availability of parts and materials, and ability to accomplish work as scheduled.
  14. Recommends cost control methods to improve performance.
  15. Performs air-conditioning tasks, as required.
  16. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.


Work Environment/Physical Requirements

This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
