Shipfitter with a minimum of two years experience working in a shipyard.

Pay Rate $25.00 - $29.50

A Shipfitter is responsible for constructing, assembling, and installing metal structures and components that form the framework of ships and marine vessels. This role requires strong blueprint-reading skills, precision cutting and fitting abilities, and the ability to work safely in shipyard environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and marine construction drawings.

  • Lay out, cut, and fit metal plates, frames, bulkheads, decks, and structural components.

  • Fabricate and install structural parts using torch cutting, grinding, plasma cutting, and welding.

  • Align, tack weld, and secure metal pieces to build or repair ship structures.

  • Install foundations, clips, brackets, stanchions, and other structural supports.

  • Use measuring tools such as levels, squares, plumb bobs, tape measures, and micrometers to ensure accuracy.

  • Prepare materials by marking, beveling, grinding, and shaping metals.

  • Operate cranes, chain falls, come-alongs, and rigging equipment to position heavy components.

  • Inspect work to ensure alignment, quality, and compliance with shipyard standards.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work area while following all OSHA and shipyard safety regulations.

  • Collaborate with welders, pipefitters, supervisors, and marine engineers to complete projects on schedule.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Proficient in structural fitting, metal fabrication, and blueprint reading.

  • Strong knowledge of ship construction methods and structural components.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and various weather conditions.

  • Familiarity with welding processes (tack welding, arc welding) is a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to use rigging equipment and heavy tools safely.
