About The Position
Certified OR Tech Needed - 4x10s -3PM START -On-call shifts required -Weekends as needed -MUST be proficient in Ophthalmology -Cataract and Vitrectomy **AS PER MANAGER** MUST be experienced in Ortho, Neuro, Robotics & Ophthalmology Years of experience REQ: 2 years Travel experience REQ: Yes Required Certifications: BLS NBSTSA JOB DUTIES: Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Surgical Technologist II participates as a member of the perioperative team. The Surgical Technologist II performs direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients having surgical and endoscopic procedures and assists anesthesia personnel. The primary focus of this position is the scrub person role. The staff member in this position must be able to participate in the planning and provision of perioperative care for patients in adolescence, early, middle and late adulthood. The Surgical Technologist II works on a flexible schedule as assigned by the Assistant Director of Surgery. Weekend shifts are assigned on a rotating basis. JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES: Preoperative Functions Assists in selecting supplies and equipment for surgical and endoscopic procedures. In collaboration with the circulating nurse is accountable for and assists in preparing the OR for surgical procedures utilizing the physician s preference list as a guide. Assists in preparing the operating room bed and set up of specialty tables. Responsible for securing instruments, supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Opens sterile packages using sterile technique.2) Intraoperative Functions Provides scrub services for minor surgical procedures. Provides competent scrub services for major procedures in at least three surgical services. Assists the surgeon in applying casts and splints. Assists the circulating nurse during major surgical procedures. Sets up specialized surgical equipment under the supervision of an RN. Provides assisting duties under the direction of surgeon:? ? Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.? ? Provides camera holding as directed by the surgeon.? ? Sponges or suctions operative site.? ? Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders.? ? Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.? ? Assists with staple skin closure as directed by the surgeon.? ? Connects drains to suction apparatus.? ? Applies dressing to the closed wound. Assumes responsibility for care of specimens while on the field and communicates accurate information to the circulator for documentation.3) Postoperative Duties Assists in transferring the patient to postoperative bed/gurney. Performs operating room sanitation tasks. Cleans anesthesia machines after use and changes breathing circuits. Loads and operates ultrasonic washer, autoclave, and steris units as needed.4) Technical Subject Matter Expert Functions Serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one surgical service. Assists Specialty Coordinator with maintenance of physician preference lists for this service(s). Assists Specialty Coordinator with maintaining specialty instruments, supplies and equipment unique to this service(s) Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies and equipment unique to this service(s). Serves as preceptor to personnel rotating through specialty service(s)5) Miscellaneous Functions: Reports defective material or equipment to Charge Nurse. Reports unsafe conditions to Charge Nurse or Assistant Director. Keeps corridors cleared. Puts away unused supplies and instruments when time allows. Updates surgeon preference lists as appropriate. Assists with the evaluation of specialty instruments and equipment. Assists with orientation of employees. Performs repetitive non-discretionary functions related to the restocking/transport of irrigation solutions (rigid containers and soft-side containers) and IV bags (without medications) on carts and in warmers. In cooperation with a registered nurse circulator, receives medications onto the sterile field (including IV solutions and irrigation solutions designated as Rx). Labels and handles medications in accordance with the medication labeling policy and procedure. Does not handle medications in a discretionary manner but provides medications to the surgeon under the direct supervision of the registered nurse circulator and surgeon6) Provides other OR duties as requested by Charge Nurses and/or Manager.7) Functions in Support Technician role as needed.8) Professional Expectations: Attends and actively participates in continuing education classes and in-services. Demonstrates commitment to unit and department goals. Attends unit staff meetings. Shares knowledge and seeks expertise of team members. Completes mandatory education and SIMS Contributes to organizational effectiveness by reporting for duty on time, adhering to hospital policy concerning breaks, and completing assigned duties in an effective, efficient and timely manner. Demonstrates commitment to customer service, follows organization s customer service guidelines; practices Service Recovery when appropriate. Adheres to the Code of Conduct set forth in the Standards for Business Conduct, Alta Bates Summit policy. Supports the mission and values of ABSMC and Sutter Health. Protects confidential material from being divulged inappropriately. Performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care. Handles all hospital property with care and diligence to avoid damage. Identifies opportunities per hospital protocol to improve work processes or safety issues that would improve the quality of care or service. Complies with practices implemented by the hospital to comply with Joint Commission and National Patient Safety goals. Promotes patient and staff CATIONEquivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.HS Diploma or equivalent education/experienceDiploma from an accredited surgical technology program or documented on-the-job training program preferredCERTIFICATION & LICENSUREBLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare ProviderCST-Certified Surgical Technologist preferredTYPICAL two years recent acute care hospital experience in surgical technologist role, with documented competency to scrub major procedures in at least three surgical specialties preferred.Ophthalmology experience preferred (Alta Bates Campus only).SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGEAbility to work in fast-paced, demanding environment.Excellent communication skills.
