The Oncology Clinical Specialist Pharmacist will manage and operate a comprehensive Oncology Pharmacy service providing the scientific knowledge and professional judgment required to improve and promote health through assurance of the safety, efficacy, and cost-effective use of chemotherapy drugs
Responsibilities
Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients to ensure safe, efficacious and cost-effective use of oncologic and supportive care medications. Demonstrates independent decision-making, clinical judgment and in-depth knowledge of oncology therapeutics. Develops and maintains a clinical practice, collaborating with medical and nursing personnel in pursuing optimal drug therapy for patients with cancer. Provides education and medication-related counseling to patients, families and caregivers about the drug therapy provided. Assists in the optimal selection of pharmacologic agents and design of a regimen to maximize therapeutic benefit and minimize toxicity. Recommends, verbally and in writing, adjustments or modifications to the drug regimen according to clinical and toxicity endpoints, professional guidelines and evidence-based literature. Develops and communicates, verbally and in writing, specific pharmacotherapeutic plans for the supportive care of individual patients. Maintains a readily retrievable and ongoing record of each patient's chemotherapy regimen, dosages, and pertinent clinical and laboratory data. Provides drug and clinical information to other healthcare professionals related to new/emerging technology, cancer treatments, and challenges encountered in the care of patients with cancer. Retrieves and evaluates relevant oncology literature. Provides clinical education and training to pharmacy students, pharmacist practitioners, and residents in the Department of Pharmacy. Participates in medication use evaluation, guideline and policy development, prepares documents for P&T evaluation/consideration (formulary, etc.) and other projects as assigned. Participates in committees, including P&T Committee, Medication Safety, and others relevant to the care of cancer patients. Follows procedures as defined for the handling of high cost and off-label medication orders (site of care restrictions, retrieval of supportive literature, etc.). Integrates new information with existing information to establish recommendations for clinical use. Develops/maintains operational protocols and procedures in accordance with regulations and professional guidelines (ASCO, ONS, HOPA USP, DNV, OHFLAC, WVBOP), and CAMC policy, etc. Responsible for the procurement, receipt, storage, compounding, dispensing and labeling of medications. Maintains departmental, institutional, and licensure-required education. Documents activities as required by regulatory/accreditation agencies, professional guidelines and CAMC policy. Demonstrates positive customer service and co-worker relations. Participates/leads performance improvement activities aimed to improve the safety, quality, cost effectiveness and efficiency of cancer care.

The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.
