Hybrid: This role is categorized as Hybrid, requiring the successful candidate to report to the Milford Proving Grounds in Milford, MI or the Global Technical Center in Warren, MI at least three times per week. This position can be based at either of these two locations.

At General Motors, we are pioneering the future of mobility through a human-centered design process. We strive to create vehicles that offer unparalleled experiences. Our innovations—from advanced hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and cutting-edge safety features—are setting new standards in transportation.

Every day, our products impact millions of lives as we aim to enhance safety, intelligence, and connectivity on a global scale.

The Role

As a Controls Integration Specialist (CIE), you will be instrumental in automating comprehensive vehicle electrical control systems, thereby enhancing efficiency, speed, and reliability throughout our product development lifecycle. This position is perfect for someone who excels in hands-on settings, enjoys solving complex interdisciplinary challenges, and is motivated to streamline vehicle testing and validation processes.

This role is integral to the Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) Architecture development, focusing on creating a robust platform that supports both Electric Vehicle (EV) and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) programs. You will be accountable for converting integration tests into automated workflows, facilitating earlier defect detection, rapid iteration cycles, and superior quality assurance. This is a highly technical role requiring proficiency in navigating interconnected vehicle control systems and addressing challenges across the entire electrical/software ecosystem.

What You'll Do

  • Develop a comprehensive automation strategy in collaboration with engineering and tools development teams.

  • Create and implement automation processes, which include documentation, playbooks, and team training materials.

  • Transform manual integration test cases into automated test suites for accelerated defect discovery and standardized work execution.

  • Work closely with controller teams, product teams, and PMO to resolve issues, clearly defining defects and ensuring alignment on resolution strategies.

  • Document and monitor defects using Jira/PRTS with clear, actionable details.

  • Become an expert in the SDV Architecture and its application across GM programs.

  • Provide specialized expertise in both bench-level and vehicle-level test automation.

  • Utilize existing automation frameworks and tools to enhance testing efficiency and consistency.

  • Conduct root cause analyses on data generated from automated tests, identifying patterns and deriving insights.

  • Implement permanent fixes into the CI/CD pipeline to eliminate recurring issues and enhance future vehicle systems’ stability and performance.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in automation testing and/or control systems in the automotive industry.

  • Proficiency in Python for test scripting and automation.

  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills.

  • Strong analytical skills for contextualizing issues and identifying trends from data.

  • Solid understanding of automotive serial data technologies, including Ethernet, CAN, and LIN.

  • Working knowledge of major automotive control systems and subsystems.

  • Basic familiarity with software languages and coding concepts (e.g., C/C++).

  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle regularly.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • DFSS Blackbelt with a strong, data-driven approach to problem-solving and design.

  • Experience with vehicle development processes and program launch cycles.

  • Hands-on experience with in-vehicle software tools such as NeoVI, Vehicle Spy, DPS, and Wireshark.

  • Familiarity with dSPACE or similar HIL/SIL systems.

  • Proficiency in analyzing Ethernet traffic using Wireshark/PCAP tools.

  • Familiarity with software release and deployment tools (VCAM, SPR, SPD, GEPICS, etc.).

  • Understanding of bench-level test equipment and methods.

  • Experience using Atlassian tools, including Jira and Confluence, for work management and documentation.
