Recreation Leader I (Part-Time Temporary)
This position may be assigned to a variety of programs/activities in the Recreation Services Division including, but not limited to, youth programs, special events, summer camp, and customer service.
- Work schedule and work locations may vary. Work locations include: West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center (ARC) and Plummer Park.
- The facilities are open Monday-Sunday 8am-10pm daily.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including opening and closing shifts, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call status.
- Work hours: approximately 20 hours per week.
- Must be 18 years or older.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performPerforms a variety of recreation functions, including: planning, organizing and overseeing recreation and educational programs; meeting with citizens and associations to discuss programs and provide information; coordinating rental of facilities; and completing various administrative reports.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
- Plans, organizes, implements and oversees recreation and educational programs and special events, including: developing goals; surveying and researching programs; promoting programs by developing various publicity materials; meeting with citizens/associations; organizing leagues; scheduling tournaments; distributing equipment; coordinating facility use; billing participants and collecting fees; maintaining records; interpreting rules and regulations; settling disputes; teaching/facilitating classes; booking and accompanying groups on field trips; and providing first aid.
- Monitors the park, park facilities and patrons, including: unlocking and locking park and facilities; inspecting facilities; enforcing rules and regulations.
- Generates and monitors program budgets.
- Performs customer service functions, including: answering phones and providing information; receiving and receipting fees and taking registration information; creating and distributing brochures, flyers, etc.; and completing cash reports.
- Answers phone; takes messages; screens calls; determines nature and priority of calls; provides information to callers; receives citizen complaints; and directs calls and messages to appropriate staff member.
- Orders and maintains equipment and program supplies; orders office and cleaning supplies.
- Performs meeting and event set up and strike functions, including moving furniture and equipment and cleaning up.
- Inspects locker rooms; reports safety hazards.
- Disseminates a variety of information to various agencies, divisions, or departments via telephone, mail or FAX.
- May serve as backup for other positions within the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Assist with recruiting and training part-time employees.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED (desirable)
- One year of coursework from college or technical school desired; and,
- One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or
- Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- CPR/First Aid Certification (desirable)

- Recreation program development techniques and processes.
- Public relations, promotions and marketing techniques.
- Recreational trends.
- Rules of a variety of sports.
- First aid and CPR.
- Sporting activities.
- Planning various recreational events.
- Facilities scheduling.
- Leading and directing games and activities.
- Instructing, officiating, coaching and supervising various recreational/athletic activities.
- Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Maintaining and performing routine repairs on all assigned equipment.
- Organizing, assigning, leading and reviewing the work of staff, as assigned, during events.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing at the appropriate level.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations at the appropriate level.
- Ability to learn to use a computer to perform the essential and important job functions.
- Ability to learn and follow City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to identify, report and follow up on facilities maintenance issues.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a normal office environment and at recreation facilities (parks) where there may be extreme temperatures, exposure to sun, dirt and/or dust.
- The incumbent's working conditions are typically moderately loud.
- Working time may require irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on-call status.

This position is a temporary position and not eligible to participate in any benefit programs of the City except those mandated by federal or state law.
Temporary employees will receive leave accruals based upon actual hours worked with eight (8) hours paid vacation for every 160 actual hours worked and one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 20 actual hours worked with a maximum sick leave accrual of 40 hours. Eight (8) hours paid holiday time will be granted to temporary employees who have 70 or more hours of paid time in the pay period in which the recognized City holiday occurs.
If an employee reaches 1,000 hours within a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th), they are then enrolled in PERS (Public Employees Retirement System).
