RN JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: School Nurse-District Float

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate of a professional nursing program approved by the MA Board of
Registration in Nursing
2. Current license as a registered professional nurse in the Commonwealth of MA
3. 1-3 years experience in pediatrics, community health or related field
4. Bachelors degree in Nursing
5. Eligibility for certification in School Nursing by the MA Department of
elementary and Secondary Education
REPORTS TO: Director of Health Services
JOB GOAL: To provide professional health services and coordinate the resource of
the school, home and community as they pertain to the total health of
students and staff.
PERFOMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assess and evaluate students health, and the degree of significance of health
problems on student education progress
2. Utilizes effective techniques to counsel students, parents and school personnel and
plan action for eliminating, minimizing or accepting health problems
3. Assume leadership role in the identification of students with health needs that
interfere with effective learning
4. Provide programs for the prevention and control of disease
5. Coordinate health services with other health disciplines in order to fulfill a total
health education program.
6. Coordinate health services with community health programs
7. Observe school facilities and recommends modifications necessary to maintain
optimum health and safety of students and school personnel.
8. Respond to Frequently encountered health and social problems:
• Child abuse and neglect
• Alcohol and other drug use
• Nutrition problems and eating disorders
• Teen pregnancy
9. Collaborate/cooperate with community providers and state agencies to meet the
health and social service needs of the students
10. Organize, carry out and report on mandated health screenings and makes
appropriate referrals and follow up on vision, hearing and scoliosis screening failures
11. Is a resource to the student, parent, principal and teachers in matters pertaining to
health.
12. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to administer medications appropriately, in
keeping with the school policy on administration of medication in the school
13. Assess family history and home situations which may affect a students health when
necessary.
14. Complete health assessments for special education evaluations. Participates in team
evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems.
15. Maintain an accurate health record on each student.
16. Document First Aid and Illness care provided to students. First aid for injured staff.
Completes accident reports, and maintains a record of health office activity.
17. Screen all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws, and makes
recommendations for exclusion of students for lack of compliance to school
administration.
18. Recommend exclusion and monitors readmission to school for students with
infectious or communicable diseases.
19. Maintain first aid supplies and equipment in an appropriate location in the school
20. Other nursing duties as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: According to teacher contract

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated on accordance with the
provision of the boards policy on evaluation

Pay: $56,415-$84,063
