Position Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of mechanical systems. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer with 5+ years of mechanical design experience, particularly in HVAC, plumbing, and/or fire protection systems, who enjoys working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
The Mechanical Design Engineer will contribute to the development of code-compliant, constructible designs and work closely with project managers and other engineering disciplines to deliver client-ready drawing packages.
This is an onsite position in North Charleston, SC.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical system design for HVAC, plumbing, and/or fire protection systems
- Develop design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications
- Coordinate with electrical, structural, architectural, and civil teams to produce complete design packages
- Apply relevant mechanical, plumbing, and energy codes and standards, including ASHRAE and NFPA
- Assist with system sizing, equipment selection, and layout development
- Participate in site visits, field investigations, and existing-conditions assessments
- Support project execution through design development and construction administration
- Review shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals to ensure compliance with design intent
- Communicate design decisions clearly with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering design experience
- Demonstrated experience designing HVAC, plumbing, or fire protection systems
- Proficiency with Revit and/or AutoCAD for mechanical system design
- Strong understanding of engineering codes, standards, and best practices
- Ability to work onsite in North Charleston, SC
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
- Experience supporting federal or DoD-related projects
- Familiarity with ASHRAE standards (including ventilation and energy requirements)
- Experience working in a multi-discipline engineering environment
- Must be eligible to work on U.S. federal contracts
- Ability to pass background checks as required by government clients
