Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and re-conditioning of automobiles and specialized heavy equipment such as, but not limited to, fire/rescue, sanitation vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and performs all phases of repair and reconditioning of diversified automotive equipment.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment and performs routine maintenance and service to include; checking fuel, oil, other fluids, battery, tires, lights and cleanliness.
  • Assist in servicing small tolls used for lawn maintenance.
  • Performs routine maintenance and janitorial work in assigned area.
  • Performs preventive maintenance with special attention given to assuring the safety of vehicles and to eliminate premature equipment failure.
  • Performs installation and repair of emergency lighting systems, cameras, sirens, and other specialized equipment, including wiring and electrical system trouble-shooting. Performs welding and brazing as required.
  • Performs Installation and minor repair of communication radios. Performs trouble shooting of computerized engine control systems.
  • Maintains record of repairs, parts used and labor expended per work order. Performs emergency road service to equipment outside garage including being available off-hours in case of emergencies.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to customers as needed.
  • Performs monthly fuel tank inspections and assists in the ordering of fuel. Assists co-workers in more complex repair work.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Basic entry level knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices associated with automobiles, fire/rescue, sanitation, law enforcement and other specialized vehicles and equipment.
  • Basic entry level knowledge of the principals and operation of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engines.
  • Basic entry level knowledge of automotive and emergency lighting electrical systems.
  • Basic entry level skill in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Basic entry level skill in using computers for data entry.
  • Basic entry level ability to diagnose and trouble-shoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems associated with all types of equipment with an emphasis on light engine equipment, in a timely, cost-effective manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide own tools, as required.
  • Ability to use various types of computer software.
  • Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
  • One (1) year of work experience in the diagnoses, maintenance, and repair of automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment.
(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.
  • May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B.
  • May be required to obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s).

Emergency Response Responsibility

Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.

Part time employees accrue hours based on the average number of regular hours worked per year.

ICMA-RC - Deferred Compensation Plans

The City offers eligible employees the opportunity to enroll in a deferred retirement plan. The money that is deducted from your paycheck each payroll is put into this account and is tax deferred at the end of the year. One-on-one meetings with each company are held quarterly so employees can speak with the representative confidentially on preparing for their retirement. This is a voluntary program.

Florida Retirement System - FRS

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Florida Retirement System with an 8 year vesting period. Employees contribute 3% of their gross earnings per payroll.

Cigna - Employee Assistance Program

The City offers this program to all employees. This is a confidential counseling program for employees and their families. The City pays for 3 visits and if you choose to continue, you would use the specialist co-pay on your insurance plan.
