Serve The People (STP) is a mission-driven Federally Qualified Health Center in Santa Ana, CA, serving a predominantly low-income, Spanish-speaking community. We're hiring two Supervising Family Medicine Physicians (MD/DO) who love direct patient care and also enjoy mentoring Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants and shaping clinic workflows.
In summary: What You'll Do
- Provide full-scope outpatient Family Medicine (acute, chronic, and preventive care).
- Have protected admin time for APP supervision (chart review, mentorship, education).
- Work closely with the fellow Supervising Physicians on operations and quality improvement.
- Collaborate with onsite specialists: GI, Podiatry, Pediatrics, and soon OB/GYN, Dermatology, Endocrinology.
- Participate in our monthly Clinician Council, where all MDs/DOs meet to solve operational issues and guide development of the medical department.
The Supervising Family Medicine Physician serves as a key clinical leader at Serve the People, providing oversight and guidance for the medical operations within our medical programs (Reproductive Health Services, Family Practice, Prenatal, and Pediatrics). S/He will help develop, organize, and implement the medical aspects of these programs and work collaboratively to achieve program goals and objectives. This role plays a vital part in shaping, implementing, and ensuring the effectiveness of our patient care delivery. The Supervising Family Medicine Physician works in close partnership with the medical team to support program goals, uphold clinical excellence, and promote high-quality, patient-centered care. The following statements for this position reflect only some specific responsibilities and are considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all duties required that may be inherent in the position:
- Provide comprehensive direct patient care in Family Medicine, including acute, chronic, and preventive care in an ambulatory setting.
- Perform and/or order advanced diagnostic tests (for example, EKGs, echocardiograms as appropriate), and interpret results as part of routine patient assessments.
- Provide direct primary care to patients across the lifespan, and have protected administrative time to formally supervise and support Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, including chart review, mentorship, and clinical oversight.
- Conduct physical assessments, administer or prescribe treatment and medications, perform necessary diagnostic tests, and review and interpret laboratory and imaging findings in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols.
- Provide surveillance of medical regimens for patients, adjust regimens within established procedures, and refer complex patient care problems to the Medical Director or appropriate specialists as needed.
- Assess and reassess patients and families' understanding of treatment plans; provide counseling, education, and clear recommendations to support adherence and health behavior change.
- Provide teaching and counseling aimed at the prevention of illness and injury, modification of risk factors, and maintenance of high-level wellness.
- Accurately and concisely document in the electronic health record all findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, instructions, education, and services rendered.
- Allocate and utilize protected administrative time to fulfill supervising responsibilities (for example, protocol adherence, quality review, APP onboarding, and ongoing mentoring).
- Provide formal clinical supervision for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, including chart review, case consultation, feedback, and coaching in alignment with STP policies and California regulations.
- Develop and conduct quarterly educational workshops for NPs and PAs on the latest clinical practices, care guidelines, and patient care techniques.
- Identify components of the care regimen that may be delegated to other licensed personnel and provide appropriate teaching and/or guidance when necessary.
- Lead the development and implementation of innovative care models that improve patient outcomes in Reproductive Health Services, Family Practice, Prenatal, and Pediatrics.
- Collaboratively work with other health agencies, specialty providers (including on-site GI, Podiatry, Pediatrics, and future OB/GYN, Dermatology, and Endocrinology), and families in the physical and emotional transitions of care.
- Provide initial care for emergencies presenting in clinic and arrange for appropriate definitive care.
- Consult and collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team (behavioral health, nursing, social services, enabling services) in the assessment and management of health problems.
- Actively participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care plans and integrate medical expertise with behavioral health and social services.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary for age-specific patient needs that employee is required to understand and meet for infant (0-1 year), child (1-5 years), school age (6-12 years), adolescent (13-17 years), young adult (18-45 years), middle adult (46-60 years), and older adult (60+ years).
- Follows STP standards for Universal Precautions when working with potentially infectious materials (blood or body fluids).
- Reports any safety hazards.
- Provide input on the development, revision, and implementation of protocols, policies, and standard procedures, and contribute to the identification of program goals, objectives, and needed changes.
- Actively participate in Quality Assurance, Patient Safety, and Performance Improvement Programs.
- Participate in STP's monthly Clinician Council, collaborating with other physicians on operational improvements, clinical workflows, and strategic development of the medical department.
- Performs additional supervisory duties as assigned by the employer to support NPMPs in practicing to the full extent of their training, licensure, and scope of practice.
- Comply with all safety, emergency, hazard, OSHA, sterilization, clinical quality assurance, and administrative protocols, guidelines, and standards.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and other relevant laws to protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the executive leadership and administration.
- Clinic hours: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday-Saturday.
- Full-time options:
- 5/8s: Five 8-hour days per week.
- 4/10s: Four 10-hour days per week.
- Any schedule fitting within these hours will be considered.
Requirements
- MD or DO; Board Certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
- 3+ years acute ambulatory experience; 2+ years in high-volume outpatient care.
- Active Unrestricted DEA License.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required (including medical terminology).
- Strong leadership, teamwork, and passion for underserved communities.
