Cogent, Inc. is seeking a Control Systems Estimator to join our team in Kansas City. The Control Systems Estimator is responsible for developing accurate scopes, pricing, and cost estimates for industrial and municipal control system projects. This role supports projects from initial customer inquiry through handoff to engineering and execution teams.
The Control Systems Estimator works closely with Control Systems Engineers, Fabricators, Sales, and Project Managers to evaluate technical requirements, define control system scope, assess risk, and produce competitive, well-documented proposals that meet customer requirements, safety standards, and performance expectations.
You’ll bring together your understanding of control systems hardware, field installation practices, and automation scope to ensure estimates are accurate, complete, and executable.
- Develop detailed cost estimates and scopes of work for industrial control system projects
- Review customer specifications, drawings, narratives, and site information to define controls scope
- Collaborate with Control Systems Engineers to validate technical assumptions and execution approach
- Prepare estimating deliverables including scope descriptions, BOMs, labor estimates, and exclusions
- Support sales teams by answering technical questions related to controls scope and pricing
- Identify project risks, assumptions, and clarifications to ensure accurate proposals
- Coordinate with fabrication and field teams to validate labor and build assumptions
- Maintain estimating templates, standards, and historical cost data
- Assist with scope changes, budget updates, and handoff documentation once projects are awarded
- Contribute to continuous improvement of Cogent’s estimating accuracy and standard practices
This position offers a mix of office- and field-based work to support estimating and sales activities. Typical allocation includes approximately 20% on-site travel to customer or project locations for pre-bid walkthroughs, scope validation, and sales support, and 80% in-office estimating and proposal development. Overnight travel is not expected.
Minimum Qualifications
- Technical degree or equivalent experience in controls, electrical, or automation-related field
- Experience with industrial control systems, panel fabrication, field installation, or commissioning
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, control narratives, and system requirements
- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems and industrial automation components
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for scope and proposal development
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as project needs require.
- Experience estimating or supporting bids for control systems or automation projects
- Familiarity with Allen-Bradley control platforms and industrial VFDs
- Knowledge of UL 508A panel standards and electrical safety practices
- Experience in municipal water/wastewater or process automation environments
- Ability to manage multiple estimates simultaneously under tight deadlines
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with shifting priorities.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
