The Telecommunications Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and inspecting a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment used to support telecommunications field operations. This includes service trucks, bucket trucks, vans, trailers, Horizontal Directional Drill, and specialty equipment such as generators, hydraulic systems, aerial lifts, and cable-handling machinery. The mechanic ensures all fleet assets operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and company standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Service aerial lift devices (bucket trucks), hydraulic systems, and related telecom-specific equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues.
  • Complete brake, transmission, suspension, exhaust, HVAC, and engine repairs as needed.
  • Conduct DOT and safety inspections to ensure compliance with federal, state, and company regulations.
  • Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, and documentation in fleet management systems.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide roadside assistance or field repairs as required.
  • Assist with equipment setup, testing, and calibration for telecom field teams.
  • Coordinate with vendors for specialized repair work or parts procurement.
  • Use diagnostic software, scan tools, and precision instruments to identify and resolve issues.
  • Maintain shop tools and ensure all equipment is operated safely.
  • Follow all safety guidelines, PPE requirements, and company policies.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 3-5 years of experience as a mechanic (fleet, heavy equipment, diesel, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of automotive, diesel, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to perform DOT-level inspections.
  • Valid driver's license CDL Class A required.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and fleet maintenance software.
  • Experience working with bucket/aerial lift trucks or telecommunications service vehicles preferred
  • ASE certifications (Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck) preferred
  • Hydraulic and electrical troubleshooting experience preferred
