General Summary of Position
The Medical Assistant plays a pivotal role in enhancing patient care within our ambulatory service environment. This position involves both clinical and administrative tasks under the guidance of a physician or registered nurse. Your responsibilities will include performing venipuncture, administering medications and vaccines, taking and recording vital signs, aiding in patient examinations, providing clerical support, and more. Flexibility to float to other sites within the organization is required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in achieving department goals while adhering to policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Support providers in preparing patients for examinations and minor procedures, facilitating optimal patient flow.
  • Engage in daily team meetings to prepare for patient visits, evaluating patient needs and concerns.
  • Conduct motivational interviews and screenings for preventive care and behavioral health needs.
  • Report any patient-related concerns in adherence to MedStar Health protocols and engage in quality improvement activities.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards by maintaining logs and overseeing medical supplies.
  • Participate in population management efforts, guiding patients in self-management and goal setting.
  • Conduct various patient and laboratory tests while accurately documenting all activities in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Provide patient support during discharge and assure a safe and respectful environment.
  • Carry out infection prevention duties, including cleaning tasks and maintaining equipment.
  • Facilitate effective communication via phone screenings and documentation of patient inquiries.
  • Under supervision, assist with IV therapy and catheter management as required.
  • Utilize the EMR for patient medication refills and manage insurance authorizations.
  • Be adaptable to float between different locations within the system as required.
  • Attend necessary trainings on safety, infection control, and overall patient care standards.
  • Demonstrate behaviors that align with MedStar Health’s mission and patient care philosophy.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is desired

Experience

  • Less than one year experience in an ambulatory care medical office or related field required; externship experience is preferred.
  • Prior medical assistant experience is advantageous.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA) within one year is required.
  • CPR certification for healthcare providers is required within 90 days.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Clinical competency to be verified within the orientation period and annually.
  • Excellent skills in patient interaction and customer service.
  • Basic computer proficiency is preferred.

This position has a hiring range of: USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
