External Description: DIRECTV is seeking a Principal, Software Engineer 2 to support initiatives that will deliver step-function improvements in customer experience and dramatic improvements in cost structure. This role demands a creative problem-solver who is a strong partner to our internal customers and a technical innovator. Experienced in complex software delivery scenarios, this lead will understand the business problem to be solved, guide employee and outsourced teams through execution, overcome obstacles, continuously improve processes, and quickly deliver solutions to market. This leader must be both a technical expert on digital delivery, but also an excellent communicator and one who productively challenges the status quo.
Here's what you'll do:
- Work with business leaders to understand execution priorities and how they result in business value; ensure that developed capabilities meet desired business outcomes.
- Participate in feasibility and cost/benefit discussions to guide prioritization and feature roadmap creation.
- Oversee technical delivery and devise approaches to implement enhancements that efficiently take advantage of existing platform capabilities where possible; consult on application architecture; deliver capabilities that are economical to sustain in the long term.
- Drive front-end technical excellence - architect and deliver performant, scalable, and reusable UI components and frameworks that ensure seamless user experiences across devices and browsers.
- Champion web performance optimization through metrics-driven improvements, including lazy loading, bundle optimization, caching strategies, and efficient state management.
- Develop delivery plans that anticipate risks and mitigate them early.
- Lead delivery teams to work with urgency and focus to deliver quality enhancements at a high velocity; remove barriers, negotiate dependencies, and manage resourcing concerns.
- Ensure that teams are operating in a standardized, measurable way; monitor and manage agile delivery metrics; drive adoption of modern delivery practices and DIRECTV standards.
- Understand backlog demands and manage vendor capacity and budgets to ensure resourcing is in place when needed, and that resources are efficiently utilized.
- Execute quality management processes (e.g. testing) to ensure solutions developed are performant and meet business requirements.
- Identify needed nonfunctional requirements (performance, alerting/monitoring, capacity, compliance, security, etc.) and ensure they are addressed.
- Prepare and provide updates to leadership.
- A bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, or a related field is preferred and highly recommended.
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering and the design, development of complex systems, including as a team lead.
- Experience working in multiple Agile methodologies (scrum, Kanban, SAFe) and familiarity with the tooling used to coordinate this work (mainly Jira, Jira Align).
- Strong expertise and proven experience in front-end technologies and frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, Vue) with a strong emphasis on building reusable components, modular architectures, and maintainable design systems.
- Proven experience delivering high-performance, accessible, and responsive web applications using modern performance profiling and optimization techniques.
- Strong understanding of web-specific processes and technologies, including requirements, design/UX, accessibility, content management systems, SEO, clickstream analytics, and tag management.
- Robust knowledge of several programming languages (e.g. Java, C++, Python, etc.).
- Expertise in modern delivery and deployment practices, such as CI/CD, quality automation, test-driven development, blue/green release strategies, etc.
- Experience developing for and deploying to cloud environments.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated judgment and decisiveness in a fast-paced, changing work environment.
- Leadership, organizational, and delegation skills to break large projects down into milestones and assign tasks best suited to team members, and to coach team members.
This role requires, but is not limited to, 5% travel.
This is a remote position that can be located anywhere in the contiguous United States. #LI-Remote

DIRECTV's compensation structure is designed to be market-competitive and fully supports efforts to attract and retain employees. It is the company's policy to offer pay that is competitive with other employers in the local market. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
The Base Salary range displayed below reflects the minimum and maximum target salary for each of DIRECTV's 4 (four) US Labor Market Zones. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
DIRECTV WAGE ZONES: $140,790 - $255,530
Low (N1): $140,790 - $211,090
Mid (N2): $148,200 - $222,200
High (N3): $163,020 - $244,420
Top (N4): $170,430 - $255,530
