Job Summary

The Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers comprehensive, family-centered care to neonatal patients in an inpatient setting. The APP attends deliveries, provides resuscitation and stabilization, manages complex neonatal conditions, and collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. This role includes active participation in unit-based quality, safety, and educational initiatives, supporting continuous improvement in neonatal care.
Minimum Education/License/Certification Requirements

Master's degree in Nursing (NNP) or Physician Assistant Studies (PA-Neonatal) required.

• Current licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse in Indiana (for NNPs) or PA license with Neonatal certification.

• Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification or PA-Neonatal certification required.

• NICU experience required; Level III-IV experience strongly preferred.

• New graduates with NICU experience will be considered.

• Current certifications in CPR, NRP, and STABLE required.

Essential Functions

Direct Patient Care
  • Use two patient identifiers before providing care or treatment.
  • Attend deliveries and provide immediate routine newborn care in the delivery room.
  • Perform full resuscitation and stabilization of newborns (NRP measures including line placement, intubation, and advanced procedures) in the delivery room, nursery, or elsewhere in the hospital.
  • Assess and manage full-term and premature infants, including those with life-threatening or non-life-threatening complications.
  • Stabilize premature or critically ill infants for transfer when indicated.
  • Admit and co-manage patients in the nursery or special care nursery.
  • Conduct comprehensive history-taking and thorough physical examinations of newborns.
  • Diagnose neonatal conditions based on clinical findings, diagnostic tests, and imaging.
  • Manage a wide range of neonatal conditions including respiratory disease, neonatal abstinence syndrome, hyperbilirubinemia, infections, endocrine/metabolic disorders, therapeutic hypothermia, anemia, and fluid/electrolyte disturbances.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic studies (labs, imaging, EKGs).
  • Prescribe medications and non-pharmacologic interventions as appropriate.
  • Coordinate ancillary and outpatient services related to neonatal inpatient care (DME, follow-ups, home care, infusion, etc.).
  • Provide treatment and interventions throughout OB and inpatient areas as needed.
Procedures (with appropriate training/privileging)
  • Direct tracheal suctioning
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Umbilical arterial and venous line placement
  • Chest tube or needle thoracentesis
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Bladder catheterization
  • Circumcision
  • Frenulum clipping
Collaboration & Communication
  • Develop individualized treatment plans in conjunction with attending physicians.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, evidence-based care.
  • Consult with neonatologists/tele-NICU physicians when indicated.
  • Refer to specialists or community agencies as appropriate.
  • Provide education, guidance, and support to families, promoting family-centered care.
  • Participate in the training and education of team members and staff.
Quality, Safety, and Education
  • Actively participate in quality improvement, utilization review, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Participate in OB unit and service-specific education, lean events, and improvement programs.
  • Standardize care using established guidelines and best practices.
  • Assist in problem list identification, documentation accuracy, and discharge planning.
  • Ensure HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, and adherence to hospital policies.
Clinical Rounding & Coverage
  • Daily rounds on OB/Nursery patients.
  • Respond to C-sections and neonatal emergencies as requested.
  • Round on critically ill patients as warranted.
  • Collaborate with ancillary staff for critical labs, imaging, and test results.
  • Facilitate smooth transfer and continuity of care between facilities and care levels.

Safety Standards

Must demonstrate knowledge, skills, behaviors, and personal characteristics necessary to practice Universal Precautions that are appropriate for Category 1 risk exposure. Must be fitted for an approved infection control mask by completing a TB Fit Test as administered by Witham Health Services approved personnel.
