A dental assistant's job description typically involves a mix of clinical and administrative duties to support dentists and hygienists in providing patient care and ensuring the smooth operation of a dental office.
Duties:
*Take and record preliminary dental history for interpretation by the dentist *Apply topical medications to oral tissues *Assist with impressions, hold impression trays in the mouth. *Set up for dental X-Rays *Assist with fillings, crown preps, cementing crowns, post & core preps and extracts *Clean and disinfect operatory after each patient *Review procedures with patients and have them sign the forms *Some filing as needed, weekly laundry duty *Serve as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and *sterilizing instruments and equipment *Help patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment *Provide patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling) *Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health *Perform office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer *Communicate with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies) *Prepare treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols *Prepare patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patient *Provide information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests *Provide instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to the treatment area; positioning instruments for dentist's access; suctioning; passing instruments *Provide materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the patient's mouth *Help dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drug and oxygen supply, and emergency telephone directory *Document dental care services by charting patient records *Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential per HIPAA *Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations *Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols Ensure operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies
Qualifications:
Two-year degree required in Dental Assistant and/or Successful completion of a Dental Assistant licensing program as per state guidelines and/or 2+ years' experience as a Dental Assistant Comprehensive understanding of dental instruments
