ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix is seeking dedicated employees with extensive journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices, houses, and other facilities. Assignments involve numerous trades and skills, such as rough carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing, routine electrical or welding work, roofing, painting, drywall finishing, concrete/masonry work, and locksmithing.

This position performs daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on doors and traditional style locks throughout city facilities and buildings. A high degree of competence in several trades is expected, with more than one at or above the acceptable skilled level. Work is performed independently or in teams and could involve occasionally serving as a crew leader over other Building Maintenance Workers for specified projects. This position is responsible for determining appropriate work methods, tools, and materials used for most assignments.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of plumbing codes and standards in repairs/replacement of various fixtures, drains, water heaters, etc.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in:
    • Commercial/residential drywall finishing and painting.
    • HVAC maintenance and repairs.
    • Electrical repairs/installation of various motors, outlets, switches, lighting and exhaust fans.
    • Installing, maintaining, and repairing door components which include; locks, closures, door frames and hinges.
  • Ability to work independently and safely using various tools and equipment of the trades, Volt Ohm Meter and climbing ladders.
SALARY

Pay Range: $24.93 to $38.68 per hour.

Hiring Range: $24.93 to $30.31 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 147. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years of skilled level experience in building maintenance and repair work, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
  • Completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program.
  • OR Six years of trades experience, three of which are at the skilled level, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus experience in/with the following:
  • Performing plumbing work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Extensive experience in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, plumbing work involving bathroom fixture replacement, and experienced in the repair and replacement of bathroom finishes.
  • Repair of interior finish.
  • Waste lines.
  • Commercial / Municipal / Governmental.
  • Working with metal framing and drywall, tape and texturing tools.
  • Painting a variety of surfaces both inside/ outside of buildings using brush, rollers and spray guns.
  • HVAC maintenance and repair.
  • Working with doors associated with electronic access control systems, low voltage locking mechanisms, automatic door openers, control gates, and door closing units.
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing door components which include; locks, closures, door frames and hinges.
