Operating through three strategic business units—Remote Sensing (data), Space Systems (components), and Mission Solutions (platforms)—we provide persistent access, resilient performance, and mission-ready solutions that enhance U.S. space leadership while promoting global safety and awareness.

About the Job:

The Mission Solutions team at Umbra is seeking a Space Mission Systems Engineer Lead to drive innovative solutions, products, and technologies addressing current and future U.S. Government needs. Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with the Space Systems and Software departments within Umbra. We’re looking for a solution-oriented innovator with exceptional technical expertise, an eagerness to explore new areas, and a commitment to tackling complex challenges using sound, first-principle methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of integrated space and ground solution concepts utilizing Umbra's existing and emerging technologies for Government-directed missions.
  • Conduct mission systems engineering, performance analysis, and use case evaluations for conceptual designs and architectural solutions for current and potential customers.
  • Contribute to the development of the company's technical portfolio, ensuring alignment between strategic goals, future mission requirements, and commercial objectives.
  • Assist the Director of Engineering in establishing a robust Modeling and Simulation capability to inform the architecture, development, and evolution of Umbra’s space-based systems.
  • Support Umbra’s Government Program capture efforts as a key technical contributor, including authoring and reviewing formal proposals and responses.
  • Act as a key technical contributor and lead engineer for Umbra’s Government Programs, overseeing con-ops development, requirements gathering, gate reviews, V&V, contract deliverables, and other systems engineering functions.
  • Travel approximately 15% to Umbra facilities in California, Washington D.C., and partner and customer sites.
  • Perform other professional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5-8+ years of experience in designing systems architecture for satellite or aerospace systems.
  • A technical degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of system architecture frameworks and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading architecture development for complex, multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience in space systems engineering.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, focused on critical thinking and innovative solutions.
  • Strong communication abilities, capable of conveying technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment while managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance if necessary.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools and practices.
  • Experience with satellite subsystems, including payload, propulsion, power, and communications.
  • Experience in space system design or operations within the U.S. Government or commercial sectors.
  • Understanding of software architecture principles and development processes.
  • Experience with system simulation and modeling tools.
  • An active TS/SCI Clearance.

Benefits Include:

  • Flexible Time Off, Sick, Family & Medical Leave.
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, LTD, and STD (employer funded).
  • Optional Voluntary Life, Critical Illness, Accidental, Hospital Indemnity, and Pet Insurance (employee funded).
  • 401k with a 3% non-elective company contribution.
  • Stock Options.
  • Free parking.
  • Complimentary daily lunch in the office.
