Cañon City is located at the mouth of the Royal Gorge, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, along the Arkansas River. The Arkansas extends the entire 60-mile length of Fremont County and flows through the City of Cañon City itself. Sheltered in a beautiful valley, Cañon enjoys a mild year-round climate. In fact, Cañon City is said to be in the "banana belt" of Colorado, seeing very few days of extreme weather. The city is 45 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, 100 miles southwest of Denver, and 40 miles west of Pueblo. With a population of more than 17,000 in Cañon City and just over 50,000 in Fremont County, economic activities include tourism, retail, manufacturing, a growing technology industry, healthcare, city and county government, grade school and higher education, and corrections. Salary: Pay for this position is determined by the 240-day Director 1 Salary Schedule and is based on education and experience. Salary Range $98,367-$120,007

Purpose of the Job:

Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment provides leadership in planning, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs to include: all PK-12 schools, summer school, early literacy, credit recovery, library services, expelled student educational programs, as well as other duties related to educational services provided to students as assigned. The Director supports and guides the Instructional Technology Coordinator's work in collaboration with the IT Director.

Additionally, the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment will be responsible for the implementation and interpretation of all district and state assessments, curriculum materials adoption, curriculum alignment, and instructional staff development.

The Director serves as the district's instructional leader, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all classrooms by supporting the development of effective instructional practices, coaching systems, and aligned professional learning opportunities.

This position also facilitates the district's Instructional Leadership PLC, fostering collaboration among school leaders to strengthen instructional coherence, monitor the implementation of district goals, and ensure continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment also oversees all district assessment practices, including state assessments, and serves as the District Assessment Coordinator.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Master's Degree preferred

Experience: 5 or more years of successful public school work experience, with a minimum of 3 years in an administrative capacity.

Licenses/Certificates: Must hold a valid Colorado Principal/Administrator License or be eligible for the same.

  • Working knowledge of school nutrition programs and requirements.

  • Ability to present information effectively, both orally and in written communication.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, guide, and direct staff in setting and achieving the highest standards of educational excellence for the District and individual schools.

Essential Duties of the Job:
  • Assume an active role in district-wide decision making by serving on the Superintendent's Advisory Council and District Leadership Team, Compass Committee, and by attending all regular Board of Education meetings.
  • Guide and participate in annual Instructional Program Reviews of district schools.
  • Provide oversight of online educational programs for grades K-12.
  • Serves as a resource to staff, parents, and the community regarding student instruction issues and as a district liaison with cooperating agencies.
  • Supervise and evaluate licensed and classified personnel as assigned.
  • Develop a vision, goals, and objectives for the department, then recommend and implement such programs as approved by the Superintendent.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of research and recent developments in education, legislation, and educational programs.
  • Develop summaries, reports, and other documentation as required or requested by the district or other state and local agencies.
  • Ensure articulation and implementation of district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Promote a climate conducive to students' academic and social-emotional success.
  • Maintain effective relationships with staff, students, parents, and the public.
  • Support and cultivate a positive image of the district.
  • Manage and appropriately assign resources.
  • Model a belief and commitment to professional and personal growth.
  • Plan, coordinate, collaborate, and provide professional development for staff on curriculum, assessment, and other new initiatives.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of instructional systems that ensure high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom.
  • Facilitate the District Instructional Leadership PLC to promote shared accountability for instructional excellence, alignment to district goals, and support for building leaders.
  • Analyze instructional trends and data to inform professional learning priorities and support differentiated coaching and feedback for school leaders.
  • Partner with principals to strengthen classroom instruction through observation, feedback, and development of evidence-based instructional strategies.
  • Collaborate with building and district leaders to ensure coherence between curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices districtwide.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources regarding New Teacher Orientation, Induction practices with the Teacher Development Coach as needed, and Evaluation Practices as related to instructional practices, Measures of Student Learning.
  • Develop and adhere to administrative policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Understands and reports on how district data is stored, processed, and transmitted by the district and by third-party Agents of the district.
  • Provides and/or restricts access to district staff and other parties to secured school, district, or department data as authorized or required.
  • Implements appropriate physical and technical safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of district data.
  • Maintains good security practices with passwords and accounts for the various district systems and applications.
  • Reports actual or suspected breaches in the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of district data to appropriate district personnel.
  • Follows all board policies for acceptable use of district technology.
  • Perform all other job-related duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent.
Skills, Knowledge, Equipment & Other:
  • An ability to gain working knowledge of federal programs and requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Executive Assistant - Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment, Disciplinary Literacy & Instructional Coordinator, Wellness Coordinator, and Instructional Technology Coordinator (collaborative supervisor).
