Blood Collection Specialist

As a key member of our team, you will provide leadership, instruction, and support to our dedicated collection staff during blood drives and at various branches. Your expertise in phlebotomy will be essential as you perform blood collection procedures and ensure compliance with organizational policies, FDA regulations, and AABB standards. If you are assigned to mobile units, you will also be responsible for driving the bloodmobile safely to collection sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor collection staff during blood drives and at branches, including planning meal and break periods.
  • Ensure strict adherence to applicable policies and procedures by all staff members.
  • Conduct thorough medical histories and vital checks for donors and patients.
  • Perform phlebotomy and collection procedures for blood and blood components.
  • Manage beginning and end of shift duties, reviewing donor records and regulated documents for accuracy.
  • Assist in recruiting donors, focusing on apheresis and platelet candidates, and support collection goals.
  • Ensure all equipment is functional and that necessary supplies are ready for blood drives or branch operations.
  • Monitor deferrals and performance to identify training needs and equipment issues.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, effectively communicating with Donor Recruitment staff regarding any issues during blood drives.
  • If working on mobiles, safely drive the bloodmobile and other collection vehicles to designated locations.

Qualifications:

To succeed in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with at least six months of related experience.
  • If assigned to mobile units, you must successfully pass CDL pre-qualifications and obtain a CDL.
  • CPR Certification is required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Ability to read and follow safety rules and operational guidelines.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Strong organizational skills for timely task completion.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to commute with personal transportation.
  • Capability to operate and drive a mobile collection vehicle if assigned.
  • Maintaining composure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including weekends and holidays when necessary.

Physical Requirements:

This role requires occasional moderate physical activity, including lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds. Tasks may involve climbing, stooping, walking, and extended periods of standing, along with the operation of phlebotomy equipment. If assigned to mobile units, driving a large vehicle will be necessary.

Environmental Requirements:

This position may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including inclement weather and potential contact with blood-borne pathogens. You will work in close quarters on mobile units, experiencing common vibrations and motions associated with such environments, where the noise level will typically be moderate.
