Materials Handler Assistant Supervisor

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Superintendent, Capitol Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Client Services Division. The incumbent serves as a Material Handler Assistant Supervisor and shares full responsibility for overseeing the operations in support of the Capitol Building. In this capacity assigns, directs and reviews the work of the subordinates. Performs nonsupervisory tasks in support of the unit's mission.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 1:30 pm - 10:00 pm (Hours may change due to the Operational Needs of Management)
Duties:
Serves as the Assistant Supervisor and Assists unit supervisor with administrative and technical supervisory functions for subordinates. Assigns duties to and evaluates their performance. Manages the organizational unit's workload. With supervisor, develops performance requirements for subordinates and ensures a mutual understanding of the performance standards.
Resolves complaints and grievances as delegated by higher level supervisors. Provides leadership to ensure support for equal employment opportunity (EEO) goals and requirements. Practices non-discriminatory employment actions to prevent unlawful discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, genetic information, age or disability. Provides for employee skills enrichment through job related coaching, mentoring and training.
Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. With assistance from supervisor, ensures that each employee has a full workload. Checks work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines. Demonstrates proper work methods and answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives (e.g., technical orders). Ensures that machine capacities are not exceeded and that tools are properly used. Reports discrepancies in quantity and quality of items received.
Submits purchase requests for Supervisory and leadership approval on orders and purchases for equipment and furniture to support special functions set-ups. Responsible for maintenance, storage and repair of furniture and equipment. Purchases necessary inside equipment, such as chairs, tables, easels, podiums, coat racks, etc. and equipment for outside maintenance, such as power washers, bobcats, leaf blowers, etc.
Along with subordinate Materials Handlers, sets up facilities for special functions. Conduct pre-event walk through with client prior to event, answer questions on best furniture arrangement for the event, discuss space capacity, etc.
Stores, delivers and sets up equipment and furniture in rooms used for special functions for Members and committee meetings.
Collaborate with furniture, upholstery, and other departments to synchronize material requirements and shipments. Identify process improvement opportunities and lead initiatives to enhance productivity and reduce operational costs.
Ensures committee rooms and other areas where access is restricted to day operations are cleaned. Operates industrial vacuum cleaners, floor polishers and other cleaning tools and equipment to vacuum rugs, clean floors, base-boards and performs other routine cleaning tasks. Loads, transports, unloads and assembles tools, parts and materials. Ensures worksites are cleaned. Ensures floors are stripped, waxed, polished and buffed. Loads and unloads trash and recycling.
May operate motor vehicles including a crew cab pickup, sedan, panel and flatbed truck, carryalls, jeep and station wagon which have a GVW of less than 26,000 pounds. Operates vehicles over Federal state, D.C. and County Roads in all traffic conditions.

- Ability to supervise employees in the performance of Material Handling (Special Functions) work including:
- Inspecting work of custodial employees to ensure that quality standards are met;
- Training others in policies and procedures related to custodial and material handling work; and
- Analyzing current shop policies and identifies areas of improvement.
