This is an Elementary School Nurse position for the 2025-2026 school year at Glen Acres Elementary School. Start date for the position is as soon as possible. Candidates must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana. This position comes with full benefits including participation in the stated PERF plan. Glen Acres Elementary School is located in the heart of the city of Lafayette just one hour north of downtown Indianapolis and two hours south of downtown Chicago along I -65 in west central Indiana. Lafayette is a growing city with a strong economic base and the LSC is growing along with it. The Greater Lafayette Area is the home of Purdue University, and the presence of the university helps to make Lafayette one of the greatest places to live in the Midwest. POSITION TITLE:
Elementary School Registered Nurse (Grades K 4)
REPORTS TO:
Director of Health Services / Nursing Coordinator
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Serve as the school health professional for an assigned elementary school. The Elementary School Registered Nurse provides nursing care, health assessments, medication administration, and health education services to students. The nurse promotes a safe and healthy learning environment, reduces health-related barriers to student success, and ensures compliance with state health regulations and Lafayette School Corporation policies.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Shall include but are not limited to the following:
1. Student Health Services and Nursing Care
- Provide nursing and illness assessment and treatment for students referred to the health office.
- Administer first aid and emergency care in accordance with LSC policies and physician standing orders.
- Perform daily health procedures as directed by physician order or supervising nurse, including asthma treatments, diabetic care, catheterization, g-tube feedings, seizure management, and other specialized procedures.
- Administer medications according to corporation policy and physician orders.
- Write, review, and update Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Care Plans for students with significant health concerns.
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records and complete required health charting for all student visits.
- Verify that student immunization records meet Indiana state requirements and maintain documentation in cumulative files and the CHIRP state registry.
- Complete health services reports, including vision screening, immunization, and monthly reporting forms.
- Conduct vision screenings in grades K, 1, and 3; make referrals and assist optometrists during scheduled screening days.
- Screen for head lice as needed and follow up with classroom inspections when infestations are identified.
- Complete accident and incident reports in accordance with LSC policy and provide copies to the Director of Health Services.
- Contact parents or guardians regarding student illness or injury to provide nursing guidance or recommend medical referral when appropriate.
- Collaborate with school staff and families to promote student wellness and academic success.
- Create and maintain a list of student health concerns from health histories and communicate pertinent information to teachers, principals, and nursing administration as appropriate.
- Serve as a medical resource to teachers and staff regarding student health needs.
- Provide in-service training for teachers and staff regarding severe allergies and diabetes management, including completion of required checklists.
- Conduct dental health education for kindergarten and first-grade students.
- Teach growth and development curriculum for fourth-grade students as assigned.
- Function under the supervision of the LSC Director of Health Services and under Lafayette School Corporation Physician's Standing Orders.
- Use the LSC nursing calendar of duties to complete annual responsibilities in a timely manner.
- Maintain a substitute nurse binder to ensure continuity of care during absences.
- Attend scheduled nurse meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
- Monitor and report safety or sanitation concerns impacting student health.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA-related school health standards, and LSC Board policy.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the building principal or Director of Health Services.
Education & Certification
- Current Registered Nurse license issued by the State of Indiana
- CPR Certification
- Pediatric, community, or school nursing experience preferred
- Knowledge of child growth and development
- Knowledge of common childhood illnesses and chronic health conditions
- Ability to perform nursing assessments and medical procedures in a school setting
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to maintain accurate electronic health records
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Work is primarily performed in a school health office environment.
- Frequent interaction with students, staff, and families.
- Occasional exposure to bodily fluids, communicable illnesses, and medical emergencies.
- Adherence to universal precautions and health safety procedures is required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
School-year position with wage and benefits established by the Lafayette School Corporation Nurse Salary Schedule.
