About the Role

We are looking for a dedicated Lead Accountant to take charge of our trust accounts' accounting and reconciliation. This impactful role is crucial to our expanding accounting team.

You will report to the Director of Accounting and collaborate with our corporate Accounting Manager, each of you responsible for distinct yet essential areas—one focusing on corporate financials and the other on customer funds. You will be the primary owner of our trust accounting operations, ensuring that customer fund flows are accurately recorded, reconciled, and reported as we scale.

This is not just a back-office position; you will be actively engaged in bridging accounting with systems and data management. Your responsibilities will include:

• Recording journal entries relating to customer fund flows in our ERP system
• Resolving reconciliation discrepancies identified by Modern Treasury
• Working cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, banks, and processors to determine root causes and establish long-term solutions
• Leading efforts to design and implement accounting logic for new products and features, ensuring precise and scalable reconciliation and reporting

Every month, you will close the trust books, reconcile accounts, and report on payment losses and recoveries, establishing a robust foundation that ensures our trust accounting is audit-ready, compliant, and scalable.

Trust Accounting & Controls

• Oversee the complete accounting and reconciliation process of customer funds across payment processors, banks, and internal systems while ensuring that documentation adheres to accounting policies and audit standards
• Record daily journal entries in the ERP reflecting trust-related receivables, payables, liabilities, and cash positions
• Ensure ERP balances are reconciled and supported by transaction-level data from Modern Treasury
• Manage Due To / Due From accounts between trust and corporate ledgers, ensuring clear, accurate, and auditable distinctions between corporate and trust funds
• Implement process enhancements to minimize manual operations and exception handling

Exception Management

• Investigate transaction exceptions such as failed settlements, chargebacks, or duplicate payments flagged in Modern Treasury
• Identify resolution paths and collaborate with both internal and external parties for effective solutions

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Act as the accounting expert for new product offerings, ensuring that reconciliation processes and controls are effectively designed and executed
• Support knowledge sharing within the organization by clearly documenting exception types and resolution processes
• Provide updates to leadership on exception volumes, resolution targets, and systemic improvements
• Contribute to financial and regulatory audits by ensuring that trust-related documentation is accurate, complete, and current

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 3+ years of experience in operational accounting, reconciliation, payment operations, or similar roles
• Familiarity with high-volume transaction environments and reconciliation tools; experience with Modern Treasury is a plus
• Proficient knowledge of ASPE or similar frameworks
• Ability to work with large datasets (e.g., Excel, SQL) and collaborate with cross-functional teams
• Meticulous attention to detail, paired with strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills
• Comfortable working independently in a dynamic, lightly-structured environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in fintech, payments, or B2B SaaS companies
• Understanding of ACH, wires, cheques, card networks, or real-time payment systems
• Experience with ERPs, databases, and payment processors such as Adyen
• Proficient in SQL
• Experience defining accounting logic for software-driven financial products
