Job Description Summary
The Associate Director of Development supports the implementation of fundraising strategies to increase private philanthropic support for the Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC. This role contributes to advancing the mission of Hollings Cancer Center and supports philanthropic priorities of the MUSC Enterprise and the MUSC Foundation with a focus on cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts that support key institutional initiatives.

As a member of the MUSC Foundation team, the Associate Director of Development collaborates with faculty, department chairs, chiefs, administrators, and enterprise leadership. This individual is responsible for managing a portfolio of donors and prospects, supporting the development and execution of donor engagement strategies and fostering long-term philanthropic relationships.

In partnership with internal and external stakeholders, the Associate Director of Development helps carry out fundraising initiatives that align the Hollings Cancer Center's priorities with the broader goals of the MUSC Enterprise and MUSC Foundation. These priorities may include capital projects, endowed chairs and professorships, student scholarships, programmatic endowments, faculty development, outreach initiatives, and unrestricted needs.

Performance will be evaluated annually based on the achievement of established goals and objectives related to fundraising activity, donor engagement, and support of team priorities.

Job Description

This individual is responsible for managing a portfolio of donors and prospects, supporting the development and execution of donor engagement strategies and fostering long-term philanthropic relationships.

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree or equivalent and 1 - 3 years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's degree and more than three years of professional experience in fundraising or a closely related field, with a preference for experience in higher education, healthcare, or nonprofit settings involving direct donor or client engagement.
  • Proven success in cultivating and securing major gifts ($10,000+).
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor cultivation techniques.
  • Ability to engage effectively with high-level donors, institutional leaders, and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong team interpersonal and team collaboration skills.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and ability to manage confidential information.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in creating proposals and presentation materials.
  • Proficiency with fundraising databases (Raiser's Edge preferred).
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work evenings/weekends as needed.


Responsibilities:
Fundraising (40%): Manage a portfolio of prospects and donors capable of making gifts of ($25,000+), ensuring strategic donor engagement through personalized cultivation, proposal development and participation in formal solicitations. Contribute to achieving established goals (e.g., dollars raised, solicitations made, solicitations funded, visits, contacts, and prospects qualified), with an annual expectation to raise philanthropic support, in alignment with institutional needs and donor interests.
Donor Stewardship (15%):Ensure long-term donor retention and satisfaction to support the implementation of strategic stewardship efforts. In collaboration with the Donor Relations Team, coordinate impact reporting, fund updates, and recognition efforts to reinforce philanthropic commitment. Assist with donor engagement through personalized outreach, stewardship events, and site visits that reinforce donor commitment to the Hollings Cancer Center.
Stakeholder & Program Engagement (15%): Assist in the coordination of engagement programs that strengthen relationships with alumni, donors, grateful patients, and advisory boards in support of long-term philanthropic goals. Work with Development Director and the Senior Director to implement strategies to enhance partnerships and donor involvement through specialized events, volunteer leaders, faculty and institutional stakeholders.
Strategic Collaboration (15%): Collaborate with MUSC Foundation colleagues in Donor Experience, Planned Giving, Advancement Services, and Corporate/Foundation Relations, to drive coordinated fundraising efforts. Partner with faculty, and clinical staff to educate and engage them in the philanthropic process. Ensure materials reflect institutional branding and philanthropic priorities. Support correspondence and communication with donors, prospects, faculty, and volunteer partners to increase engagement and visibility.
Communication Support (10%): Assist in the preparation and coordination of communication materials, proposals, and presentations in collaboration with faculty, clinical leadership, and the MUSC Foundation team. Ensure materials reflect institutional branding and philanthropic priorities. Support correspondence and communication with donors, prospects, faculty, and volunteer partners to increase engagement and visibility.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%): Works with the Senior Director of Development to fulfill tasks ensuring alignment with fundraising strategies and participates in professional growth opportunities that support overall development goals.
