Lead Cybersecurity Engineer

Description & Requirements

Maximus is seeking an experienced Lead Cybersecurity Engineer to provide exceptional technical leadership and strategic guidance in cybersecurity for a critical Homeland Security contract. This role offers a unique opportunity to ensure the security and integrity of mission-critical systems while leading a talented team.

This position requires hands-on expertise in cybersecurity, risk management, and compliance. The ideal candidate will work on-site, five days a week, at our facility in Annapolis Junction, MD, and must be available for an on-call roster to address operational needs.

Job-Specific Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Act as the primary cybersecurity technical lead, ensuring compliance with Homeland Security policies and directives.
• Design and implement cybersecurity strategies and frameworks that strengthen the security posture of critical systems.
• Manage security risk assessments, vulnerability management, incident response, and threat intelligence efforts.
• Mentor and guide cybersecurity engineers and analysts in best practices and methodologies.
• Conduct security architecture reviews and technical assessments to identify vulnerabilities and mitigate risks.
• Collaborate with various stakeholders to align security requirements with business objectives.
• Assist in continuous monitoring efforts, security audits, and maintaining regulatory compliance.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to support security operations and incident response.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job-Specific Minimum Requirements:

• 10+ years of experience in cybersecurity, IT security, or related fields.
• Active Secret clearance is required.
• Must be a US Citizen without dual citizenship.
• Position is on-site at a government facility, requiring a five-day presence weekly in Annapolis Junction, MD.
• Candidates must live within a commutable distance.
• Participation in a rotational on-call schedule for emergency responses is essential.
• Strong knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., NIST, RMF, FISMA) and industry best practices.
• Proven experience leading cybersecurity teams and driving large-scale security initiatives.
• Hands-on experience with security tools such as SIEM, IDS/IPS, vulnerability scanners, and endpoint security solutions.
• Effective communication and leadership skills, with the ability to interact with both technical and executive teams.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

• CISSP certification is strongly preferred (other certifications such as CISM, CISA, or CEH are additional assets).
• Experience in supporting Homeland Security or other federal agencies.
• Knowledge of cloud security frameworks (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
• Possession of advanced technical certifications (e.g., CISSP-ISSAP, GIAC, OSCP) is advantageous.
