On physician order applies a variety of casts, orthotic devices, and traction devices for patients of all ages. Assists physical therapists of PFCU with direct patient care activities. Assists PFCU staff with direct patient care activities. This position requires age related competencies. Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of casting and traction duties and supervises and trains employees of cast and traction.
- Performs a variety of activities related to application of casts, splints, and fracture braces after receiving physician orders.
- Applies a variety of casts and splints utilizing a variety of materials and equipments. Demonstrates skill level appropriate to independent casting.
- Instructs patient in cast precautions and usage.
- Performs cast modifications as appropriate, i.e., wedging, trimming, removal, etc.
- Performs a variety of activities related to application of traction equipment.
- Assembles, transports, installs, and applies a variety of traction set-ups.
- Instructs patient in correct use and purpose of equipment.
- Cleans and adjusts the equipment daily to ensure its proper use.
- Disassembles, cleans, inspects for repairs, and returns equipment to proper storage location.
- Fabricates and fits a variety of orthotic equipment and supplies to include foot orthoses, knee stabilization braces, corsets, and pre-manufactured braces.
- Measures and molds to determine correct size.
- Fabricates devices and/or forwards measurements to manufacture.
- Fits device to patient, ensuring correct fit, and prescribed results; modifies and/or corrects device as necessary.
- Instructs patient in use, care, and precautions.
- Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Cast and Traction Service.
- Provides supervision, instruction, and assistance to employees of the institution who may be involved in cast and traction services.
- Orients and trains assigned employees in skilled services and knowledge-base of field.
- Coordinates daily work load.
- Maintains/secures adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work place.
- Provides/maintains a variety of necessary patient-related and administrative records. *
- Maintains supply, inventory, and equipment records.
- Logs and monitors volume of services.
- Keeps accurate records of services provided and fees charged.
- Provides patient-related chart documentation as required.
- Coordinates with and assists with planning and operations related to patient care on the PFCU.
- Provides a positive work climate.
- Communicates frequently with orthopedic and other physicians to clarify orders, describe patient response, etc. Maintains good working relationship with all medical staff.
- Performs direct patient care as assigned by PFCU staff with transferring patients to wheelchair, repositioning, transporting patients to other departments and at discharge.
- Coordinates with and assists Physical Therapy Satellite operations, including transportation and assistance in direct patient care.
- Develops and maintains good rapport with other hospital departments and personnel. Assist the PFCU Director with planning and evaluation of service activities and functions.
- Assists with budget development and fiscal management.
- Assist with planning and implementation of Quality Improvement Program. HEAD NURSE PATIENT FOCUS CARE AND DIRECTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY This position may have additional or varied physical demand and/or respiratory fit test requirements. Some exposure to infectious diseases when handling open wound dressings and drilling screws into patient bones. Occasional risk for back injury. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE:
- 3 years' experience in casting with 2 years performing casts independently, i.e., under general direction, but not limited supervision of physician
- BLS (Basic Life Support) Issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association within 60 days
- Evidence of training and experience in foot orthotics, cast application, and traction procedures
- Ability to apply anatomical and biomechanical principles in work
- Good knowledge base in Orthopedics
