BUS OPERATOR FOR SPECIAL EVENTS/FIELD TRIPS
EXTRACURRICULAR POSITION/CLASSIFIED

JOB SUMMARY
Performs work transporting students and sponsors/chaperones to and from special events and field trips; does related work as required. The ideal candidate will have no limitations that will interfere with the ability to control and drive a school bus. Occasional operation of vehicles during inclement weather may be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensures that the bus can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip safety inspections as required by federal and state laws, including observing visual
defects and checking operating systems, including brakes, horns, lights, emergency flashers, extended stop arms, and door-opening devices.
• Operates the vehicle safely over an assigned route, picking up and delivering only authorized students at assigned bus stops, and watches to ensure that no one
hurrying for the bus is left behind.
• Maintains safety equipment; reports unsafe bus conditions.
• May be required to complete forms and reports in a timely manner.
• Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the CDL manual, Regional School Board Policy and local ordinances.
• Reports undisciplined students to the Activities Director.
• Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices on the bus as needed.
• Loads the bus according to procedures.
• Notifies the proper authorities of bus breakdown or deviations in schedule.
• Ensures all pupils are accounted for.
• Reports all operating and equipment deficiencies.
• May be required to fuel the bus.
• Transports only authorized students and personnel.
• Reports all accidents immediately, requesting police or ambulance service as needed; assists injured persons until services arrive; and completes required
accident reports.
• Ensures passenger safety and maintains discipline on the bus.
• Notifies the proper authority in cases of mechanical failure, safety deficiencies, when off schedule, or other incidents.
• Exercises responsible leadership and appropriate behavior when on school trips.
• Submits to drug testing when required.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Ability to understand written and oral instructions and some knowledge of area streets and traffic regulations.
Must be at least 21 years of age with no felony conviction charges. Must have zero driving points or above. Have not been assigned by a judge to take a driving
improvement clinic.
• Commercial Driver License (CDL) from DMV is required. Current DOT physical required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Tasks that involve infrequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues. Risk involved with travel on main highways, side streets, and rural roads during business travel, including evenings and weekends. Tasks that involve handling implements or utensils, use of public or shared bathroom facilities or telephones, and personal contacts. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. This job involves sitting for long periods as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, and climbing. Able to work a flexible schedule. Must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

TERM:
Serves from year to year on the recommendation of the Director. The amount of the supplement is based on the guidelines for Extracurricular Activities and the number of
years of known or documented experience.

STIPEND/SUPPLEMENT:
Trip stipend is available for each run completed.
