Position Summary
Maintenance Technicians play a key role in making Oakland Zoo a pleasant and enjoyable place for our guests and animals by providing maintenance for facilities and vehicles. They provide thoughtful and responsive customer service to internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, park visitors, contractors etc.) guests at our 100 acre property. They demonstrate excellent judgement in all activities and positive leadership skills when completing projects while supervising Maintenance Helpers.
Essential Job Duties:
- Perform routine repairs and maintenance of zoo facilities.
- Work independently and with little supervision on maintenance projects around the zoo.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Responsible for performing all routine and assigned maintenance per Federal, State, manufacturer, and Zoo Maintenance Department standards.
- Perform painting and carpentry duties as needed.
- Support Rides and Fleet maintenance goals.
- Undergo further training as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Valid Driver's License and good driving record (ability to obtain authorization from the Zoo's Insurance Carrier)
- At least 3 years' experience in a professional maintenance position or journeyman-level experience in related trades
- Ability to attend walkdowns or planning meetings and develop project scope
- Must possess skills in the safe use of tools and equipment associated with carpentry, plumbing , electrical, HVAC, welding and mechanical work, including working at heights
- Basic knowledge of general construction practices
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and manuals
- Understanding of parts and materials needed to complete projects and how to communicate needs for purchasing
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and in all types of weather.
- Trade school certification or graduation
- HVAC, welding, electrical, plumbing, Experience and/or certifications in HVAC, welding, electrical, plumbing, pool maintenance, commercial painting, and/or carpentry work.

- Work in indoor and outdoor environments in various weather conditions, and occasionally at heights.
- Able to bend and twist, lift, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for long periods of time (8 hour shifts)
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs.
- Able to walk long distances on uneven terrain in variable environmental conditions (e.g., steep, muddy, etc.)
- Able to work at heights (lift equipment and ladders)
