Asst Controller, Financial Reporting and Analysis

The Assistant Controller for Financial Reporting and Analysis assures integrity of financial information related to financial analysis and audits, financial reporting systems, and compliance. This position is also responsible for management and oversight of the University's long-term investments and restricted private contributions. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the financial system generation and analysis of financial statements and reporting to internal and external agencies. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Finance/Controller and Chief Compliance Officer, this position works collaboratively and with the Associate Vice President for Planning and Budget, the Treasurer, and other members of the finance group. As a principal advisor to the VP for Finance/Controller and CCO, the Assistant Controller is also responsible for contributing to new initiatives aimed at continually improving the University's financial position. The incumbent plays a strategic role in helping to identify opportunities to improve processes in the department and throughout the University. The Assistant Controller also advises the finance staff as needed, gathers and analyzes data, generates ad hoc reports, and makes recommendations to the VP, EVP and other University leaders. This position serves as a liaison between the University community and the finance department, and is charged with making critical decisions that may have a material financial impact on the University. The Assistant Controller for Financial Reporting and Analysis acts in the absence of the VP for Finance/Controller and CCO, and interacts with the EVP/CFO as requested.
Position Duties
- Oversees the monthly, quarterly, and annual generation of financial statements and reporting to internal and external agencies.
- Prepares the University's financial statements, financial reports for the individual schools, and reports required for external purposes.
- Gathers and analyzes data, generates ad hoc reports, and makes recommendations to the VP, EVP and other University leaders.
- Assists the Budget and Planning department by forecasting various expense categories. Reviews, evaluates and approves capitalization expenditures.
- Assists the Development and Alumni Relations division by providing guidance in accounting treatment of restricted contributions, reconciliations and donor reporting. Assists schools and departments in compliance with and utilization of donor- restricted funds.
- Serves as a primary liaison with all external investment advisors and managers for the long-term investments and serves as staff to the University's Investment/Pension Committee of the Board of Trustees ensuring adherence to investment policies and committee decisions are implemented.
- Maintains Banner chart-of-account information and resolves various finance related operational issues as they arise.
- Contributes to new initiatives within the University and participates in University-wide initiatives, often with senior leaders of the institution.
- Provides input when initiatives are developed, in order to help ensure that financial resource needs and risks are well understood as commitments are being made.
- Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Directly supervises four full-time staff members. May exercise functional supervision over other staff with finance management responsibilities on cross-functional initiatives.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field required.
- Eight + years of direct, progressively responsible experience with financial management is required.
- Technical and management expertise in a highly complex and decentralized institution is required.
- Previous experience with Banner software is desirable.
- Experience working in finance and administration in an institution of higher education preferred.
- Strong accounting technical skills, analytical expertise and ability to research and formalize accounting treatment of significant transactions.
- Working knowledge of computer-based accounting systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software is required.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the institution.
- Excellent presentation skills and ability to support various committees of the Board of Trustees, including the Finance, Audit, & University Operations Committee, and the Investment/Pension Committee.
- Must demonstrate creative leadership and the ability to serve as a change-agent.
- Motivated, self-directed, and able to work under pressure and simultaneously manage numerous deadlines.
- Must be a strategic thinker, with an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation.
- Must have a commitment to exceptional quality.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with additional hours as needed.
