BOTANY INTERN

San Diego, CA, United States San Diego Natural History Museum Full time
Love nature? Then you're going to love The Nat.

The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) was founded by amateur naturalists in 1874 and has played a major role in the conversation of our region. The Museum recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and completed a strategic plan focused on encouraging a love for nature, levering science and collections for conservation, and using our own voice to be here for nature.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is excited to offer a unique opportunity with funding from the California Institute for Biodiversity, Collections Projects Grants. The Botany department received funding for purchasing cabinets to expand our herbarium into a separate space and for a part-time temporary intern to assist with the collections move.

BOTANY DEPARTMENT PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Botany department will be hiring a part-time Botany Intern, lasting up to 12 weeks to assist with the move of part of the collection into the annex space. The intern would spend some time learning about the collection and then work with staff to come up with a logistical plan and help with carrying out the move of part of the collection to the annex where the new cabinets will be housed. The intern would gain valuable collections management skills, learn about pest management, and have hands on experience with the collections move. This will require the ability to do physical work, moving specimens from cabinets in one space to another.

Eligibility:
  • Open to Biology/Botany/Museum studies students or professionals, especially those looking to learn or build skills in collection management and curation.

This is a part-time, temporary position for up to 200 hours total (flexible schedule 1-2 full days or 3-4 partial days per week)

Pay: $20/hour.

Employees enjoy free admission into all of Balboa Park's museums as well as free admission to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. Learn more about the Museum's benefits here.

Ready to apply?

Please include a resume and cover letter in your application. No phone calls or drop-ins please.

Applications will be reviewed until candidate is selected.
