Khan Lab School (KLS) is an independent, nonprofit, co-educational school founded by Sal Khan in 2014 to reimagine education for the future. Inspired by The One World Schoolhouse, KLS brings mastery-based, student-centered learning to life. Today, Khan Lab School operates two schools, serving over 300 students in its flagship Silicon Valley campus and 30+ students in its newly opened campus in Wichita, KS. The school has a long history of strong financial management, with $12M in annual revenue, $4.5M in reserves, no debt and clean annual audits.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This role serves as a key strategic partner to the Executive Director, leadership team, and Board of Trustees in advancing the school's mission and ensuring financial sustainability and operational excellence. The Senior Director of Finance & Administration is responsible for managing all aspects of the school's financial health, including strategic stewardship of the school's financial resources, day-to-day financial operations, long-term strategic planning, oversight of risk management and all fiduciary responsibilities. In addition, the Senior Director of Finance & Administration drives organizational growth and sustainability while overseeing a small, high performing team responsible for the school's operations, including campus operations and safety, technology and data, business and development operations, and human resources.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Finance & Accounting

  • Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the school, including accounts payable and receivable, tuition and financial aid, payroll and benefits administration and monthly close. Partner with our outsourced accounting support to ensure robust financial processes, internal controls, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and clean annual audits.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Senior Leadership Team on how to best use financial resources to achieve our goals. Lead long-term financial planning, scenario modeling, and capital planning to support the school's growth. Oversee the annual budgeting process, ongoing budget management, and provide regular financial reporting to leadership and the Board of Trustees.
  • Manage financial risk, including insurance coverage, liquidity, and contingency planning.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including managing investments and reserves; ensure consistency and alignment with Board-approved investment policy.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Business Operations & Development to oversee and track contributions, including restricted gifts.
  • Utilize data analytics and financial metrics to drive strategic decision-making across all school operations.
Operations, Technology & Data
  • Provide oversight for campus operations, safety, technology infrastructure, and business functions through direct supervision of the Senior Director of School Operations & Technology and the Director of Business Operations & Development.
  • Support and guide new capital projects, including facilities renovation and future campus planning.
  • Supervise the KLS Assistant Director of Data and oversee core data systems, including the school's SIS, LMS, Tuition Management, and related infrastructure.
  • Oversee the collection and reporting of school institutional metrics and oversee student, staff, family, and alumni surveys.
  • Lead organizational change management initiatives to support the school's innovative educational model and operational scaling.
Human Resources, Legal & Risk Management
  • With Executive Director and outsourced HR support, oversee core people operations including new talent acquisition, employee policies, reporting and compliance, and compensation and benefits administration.
  • Oversee annual employee agreement renewals process.
  • Conduct compensation benchmarking and collaborate with the Board to set competitive salary scales.
  • Oversee the annual faculty and staff performance evaluation process with the Executive Director and School Directors.
  • Facilitate in-person employee training.
  • Support the Executive Director in managing investigations, claims, disputes, or litigation as needed.
Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives
  • Refine the school's annual planning process and link it to long-term strategy, collaborating with the Executive Director, Board, and school leadership on the development and implementation of a Three-Year Strategic Plan.
  • Support the school's re-accreditation process.
  • Partner with the Board of Trustees and Executive Director to launch a capital campaign
  • Support long term Campus Master Planning efforts.
  • Manage key stakeholder relationships with donors, vendors, and community partners to advance school initiatives.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong alignment to the Khan Lab School vision and a passion for designing and implementing new student-centered education models.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field; advanced degree (MBA, CPA, or equivalent) preferred.
  • 7-10+ years of senior-level finance and operations leadership experience, ideally within independent schools, higher education, or mission-driven nonprofits.
  • Experience building and managing high performing teams in finance and operations.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial management.
  • Strong problem-solving, financial modeling, and budgeting skills.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with operational savvy and a systems-oriented mindset.
  • Experience managing HR, compliance, and risk management programs preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills and ability to thrive in a collaborative, innovative environment with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with financial systems, educational technology platforms, and data analytics tools.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging.
PHYSICAL WORK REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push and pull up to 25 pounds as some regular organizational tasks involve moving desks, chairs, equipment, and other school supplies, as needed.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time.
  • Capable of occasionally moving around an office environment to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Ability to proficiently and frequently operate a computer and keyboard as well as other office equipment such as calculators, copy machines, printers, and projectors.
  • Consistently practice safe working habits while using school supplies, equipment, and electronics as well as the ability to maintain a safe and hazard-free workstation for yourself and others at the school.
  • Occasionally required to work weekends, nights, or be on-call for special events, which are sometimes held outside and require the ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions at any time of the year.
  • Ability to properly communicate information and ideas so other people can understand as well as the ability to ascertain and understand information communicated from others.

  • Salary Range: $200K to $225K per year, depending upon experience.
