GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, the Mechanic 3 plans, schedules and assigns work of Mechanics; schedules, coordinates maintenance and repair of equipment; trains and instructs mechanics as to proper maintenance and repair procedures; and performs most difficult maintenance and mechanical repair on County equipment such as repairs electrical components, replaces and rebuilds engines, motors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, etc
QUALIFICATIONS: An example of acceptable qualifications:
Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or technical training institute with major course work Automotive Technology, Automotive Technician, Automotive Maintenance and Repair or Diesel Technician or closely related field and three (3) years' work experience in performing equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid state of residency driver's license. Must remain insurable under the County's vehicle insurance policy. Must have or be able to obtain within the first ninety (90) calendar days of appointment, a valid Class A - Commercial Driver's License issued by the state of residency.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:
- Coordinates employees (e.g., plans, schedules, and assigns work of Mechanics).
- Schedules, coordinates maintenance and repair of equipment;
- Determines cost-effective repair procedures;
- Approves and/or purchases parts for repair in accordance with established procedures;
- Maintains inventory; maintains records of work performed, labor and materials used, etc.;
- Inspects equipment at regular intervals; assists in preparing new equipment specifications and meets with equipment dealers regarding same;
- Purchases equipment as provided for in budget
- Operates pickup truck and wrecker;
- Performs most difficult maintenance and mechanical repair on County equipment (e.g., repairs electrical components, replaces and rebuilds engines, motors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, etc.).
- Maintains records of equipment repairs and maintenance (e.g., oil changes, lubes, parts replaced, tune-up, dates, etc.);
- Records daily use of fuel;
- Completes time sheets recording hours worked by mechanics;
- Oversees work of mechanics;
- Maintains adequate supply of parts and supplies needed for maintenance and repair.
- Trains and instructs mechanics as to proper maintenance and repair procedures;
- Explains new equipment operation;
- Answers technical questions
- Welds cracked or broken metal parts and appendages on equipment and vehicles;
- Cuts shapes and fabricates brackets, hinges, special tools, etc.
- Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance;
- Due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Mechanic 3 must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so
