Job Type: Full-time

Contract: 200 days; 10 month employee

Salary Scale: Per approved board scale

FLSA Status: Exempt

General Definition of Work: Provides therapeutic/intervention services for students identified with speech, language, voice and fluency disorders. May select alternative communication systems and instruct teachers on proper use. May perform research related to speech and language problems. Conducts speech screenings and assessments individually and as part of a full team of evaluators.

Qualifications Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Essential Functions:
  • Assesses communication disorders including test interpretation and formal report writing.
  • Conducts the entire referral process to determine a student's eligibility for special education services within federal/state/division procedural guidelines.
  • Provides speech language therapy in accordance with a written educational plan for students with a wide range of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive impairments.
  • Develop and/or implement treatment plans for students with stuttering, disordered articulation, disordered language, swallowing disorders, voice problems, or for students who are minimally verbal or non-verbal based on their own assessments as well as recommendations of interdisciplinary team members.
  • Participate in and write reports for meetings regarding students' progress, such as individualized educational planning (IEP) meetings, in-service meetings, or intervention assistance team meetings.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with parents, school personnel, and outside agency professionals.
  • Monitor students' progress and adjust therapy accordingly.
  • Evaluate hearing, speech and language test results, medical and/or background information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, or swallowing disorders.
  • Document attendance and daily therapy programming.
  • Send monthly documentation for Medicaid students to the central office.
  • Serve as the case manager when Speech/Language Impairment is the primary disability.
  • Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communications and speech improvement.
  • Prepares and maintains student records and files.
  • Assist in transitioning special education therapy students from one educational program to another from one school to another.
  • Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures for identification of speech and language impairment(s) and therapy; thorough knowledge of casework methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal resources programs, procedures, laws, rules, and regulations; ability to conduct assessments effectively and interpret findings; ability to communicate ideas effectively in both oral and written formats; skill in the use of personal computers and related software, hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.

Education and Experience:

Master's degree with coursework in speech or language pathology and licensed by the Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP). https://www.dhp.virginia.gov/aud/

Special Requirements

Possession of appropriate VA license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ability to operate motor vehicles.

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with visitors and clients. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages as needed; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs as needed. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.

ADA Compliance

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in frequent standing, walking, sitting and repetitive motions at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing or sitting. Sensory Requirements: Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Most tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, but at times may include exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
