POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Corrections Recovery Coach plays a crucial role in providing peer recovery support services (PRSS) and supporting justice-involved individuals with opioid use disorder, stimulant use disorder, and other substance use disorders. They use their lived experience with substance use recovery to provide strengths-based, person-centered support to peers all within the context of the unique challenges present in various corrections environments. They offer empathy, understanding, and encouragement, aiming to motivate positive change and sustained recovery. Recovery coaching may involve goal setting, coping strategies, re-entry support, and assistance in accessing relevant resources. It may also involve transporting individuals to treatment and recovery related services, and to access community resources that build recovery capital.
Consistent and reliable attendance is essential in this role due to the scheduling needs of correctional facilities, the needs of the population served, and the requirements and time-sensitive nature of grant-funded programming. The Corrections Recovery Coach must agree to adhere to a confidentiality agreement and demonstrate passion for Full Circle's mission and core values, including the concept of ensuring that recovery comes first. This is a non-exempt position and is based on a 40-hour work week.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Peer Support and Mentorship
• Offer peer recovery support services, including recovery coaching, to individuals in corrections settings and/or who are justice involved and dealing with opioid use and other substance use challenges (e.g., county jails, transitional housing, community-based corrections, specialty courts).
• Practice appropriate self-disclosure of personal recovery experiences to inspire and motivate individuals to seek positive change.
Assessment and Goal Setting
• Utilize and implement evidence-based practices to determine individual needs to assist with goal setting.
• Collaborate with individuals to set realistic and achievable recovery goals.
• Collect and enter data into the organization's data system, assist with reporting and continuous program improvement.
Individualized Recovery Plans
• Develop individualized recovery plans tailored to each person's unique circumstances and goals.
• Provide guidance on accessing relevant resources and services while incarcerated and upon release.
• Support and encourage multiple pathways of recovery, including harm reduction strategies.
Advocacy and Education
• Advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals with substance misuse or mental health challenges within the corrections system.
• Educate individuals on available treatment options, recovery resources, coping strategies, and self-advocacy.
Collaboration with Providers
• Coordinate with healthcare professionals, counselors, and providers to ensure a holistic approach to recovery.
• Maintain collaborative relationships with corrections staff and providers to provide the most meaningful and effective peer recovery support services for recoverees.
Documentation and Reporting
• Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions and progress.
• Prepare reports on individual outcomes and contribute to program evaluation.
Re-entry Planning
• Assist individuals in developing reentry plans that address housing, employment, and ongoing support post-release.
• Connect individuals with community resources to enhance their chances of successful reintegration, including peer recovery support services at the Full Circle Recovery Community Centers.
Self-Care and Professional Development
• Engage in ongoing training and professional development to stay informed about best practices in recovery coaching on topics such as ethics, boundaries, communication skills, recovery principles, and understanding of addiction and multiple pathways of recovery.
• Practice self-care to maintain personal well-being and resilience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Lived experience with substance use disorder and sustained recovery preferred.
• Personal experience with substance use disorder, mental health conditions, recovery, and/or justice system involvement preferred.
• Knowledge of or personal experience with rural populations, recovery systems, medication-assisted treatment, multiple pathways of recovery, harm reduction, criminal justice systems,
strengths-based approaches, person-centered approaches, and peer recovery support services preferred.
• Relevant education and experience in recovery settings, human services, social work, criminal justice, or related field within the nonprofit sector.
• Must agree to complete the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy and Ethical Considerations for Recovery Coaches within three months of hire.
• Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and adapt to changing circumstances.
• Must be an independent thinker, trustworthy, dependable, and responsible.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills; capable of interacting with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and partnerships simultaneously.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom), and data management.
• Valid driver's license, good driving record, car insurance, and reliable transportation. Willingness to travel to rural areas and satellite office locations.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work is performed in a typical office or administrative environment as well as at partner organizations in the community. Regular travel to rural areas and satellite offices (mileage reimbursement provided if applicable, and/or access to company vehicle for travel).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Driving, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, lifting, reaching, talking, hearing, grasping and finger dexterity, repetitive motions.
- Sitting approximately 50 percent of the time.
- Standing approximately 20 percent of the time.
- Walking approximately 20 percent of the time.
- Driving approximately 10 percent of the time.
- Requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force continuously.
- Up to 50 pounds of force infrequently to lift or otherwise move objects.
VISION REQUIREMENTS:
The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, and extensive reading.
