Contract Software Engineer (Backend / Platform)

Location/Type: Remote (US); Full-time, contract/independent consultant (NYC area is a plus )

The role

We're looking for a senior-level backend/platform engineer to join as a full-time contractor, working exclusively during the engagement.

You'll be responsible for designing and shipping critical backend features that sit close to... core ledger and funding systems -things like notice distribution, beneficiary tracking, and withdrawal management. You'll work directly with... senior engineers and company leadership, with a lot of ownership.

This is a good fit if you've seen what "real scale" looks like at a modern fintech (e.g., Robinhood, Cash App, Stripe, Coinbase, etc.) and want to bring that bar to an earlier-stage company where your work is central to the product.

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and maintain backend services
  • Own APIs and event-driven workflows that connect custodians, TPAs, payroll providers, and internal tools
  • Work closely with product, ops, and compliance to translate messy real-world constraints into robust systems
  • Build "engines, not scripts": automation that can be reused and extended, not one-off hacks
Desirable competencies
  • Strong experience with modern backend frameworks, API design, and event-driven systems
  • Strong architecture design and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in any of the following: Kotlin, Rust, Java, Go, C/C++, Python, Ruby, or TypeScript
  • Experience working with MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Experience with modern build systems and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Nice to have: experience with workflow-based systems (e.g., Temporal, Cadence, or similar) and comfort modeling long-running business processes

  • Commitment: Full-time (40 hrs/week) , dedicated... during the contract
  • Location: Remote in the US; NYC desirable for periodic in-person work with the team (occasional travel may be needed if not located in NYC)
