Job Description
SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Library Branch Assistant is responsible for the daily operation of an outlying branch library under the general direction of library administration. This position provides customer service, circulates library materials, maintains branch collections, assists patrons with reference and technology needs, and coordinates programming and community outreach in consultation with the supervisor. The Branch Assistant serves as the primary library representative in the community and must be able to work independently while following established library practices and guidance.
MYBRARY BRAND AND COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIONAll library employees serve as ambassadors for Mybrary, the Elko-Eureka County Library System. Staff are expected to understand, support, and communicate the library's brand identity, mission, and values in all interactions. Employees should actively advocate for library services, uphold the Mybrary ideals of exploration, discovery, and connection, and positively represent the library in the community, both inside and outside the workplace.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions:
  • Ensures a welcoming attitude and environment are presented to all library patrons.
  • Circulates library materials, issue library cards, manage patron accounts, and assist patrons with locating materials.
  • Assists patrons with reader's advisory and reference questions; helps identify and clarify needs by asking questions in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Assist patrons with computer use, printing, scanning, copying, and public Wi-Fi access.
  • Opens and closes the library.
  • Maintains branch collection, including shelving, shelf-reading, weeding, and preparing items for rotation.
  • Files and shelves library materials by approved procedures. Maintains shelves in appropriate order through constant and consistent shelf reading.
  • Maintains accurate records, statistics, and reports; submit required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Attends training workshops and participates in staff meetings.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming facility environment.
  • Issues patron library cards and enters data in the system.
  • In coordination with supervisor, plans, prepares, presents, and evaluates program activities for patrons of all ages (such as story time, crafts, outreach visits, book clubs, Summer Reading Program, outreach, and special events).
  • Assists with program publicity and promotion in accordance with library communication guidelines and under the direction of the supervisor.
  • Works with supervisor to create collaborations and partnerships with community organizations as needs and opportunities arise. Requests and maintains necessary office supplies for branch operations.
  • Collects monies for lost and paid library materials, and for printing, copies, and faxes.
  • Updates supervisor on work status and important developments they may need to know to function effectively; communicates effectively with supervisor regarding community needs, concerns, and operational issues.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 year of work experience
  • Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license
  • Must maintain any required approvals and designations as required

  • Must be available during library operation hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adjust to scheduling needs.
  • Must maintain patron confidentiality and advocate for patron privacy.
  • Must feel comfortable working with patrons of all ages and backgrounds in an inclusive and respectful manner.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to intellectual freedom and provide access to library materials and resources for all patrons, regardless of personal beliefs. Staff are expected to assist patrons in finding information without judgment or censorship.
  • May be temporarily assigned to other departments or branch locations to support operations or training needs.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
      • Work is performed in a public library environment, often as the sole staff member on duty.
      • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
      • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may frequently be required to stand or walk for long periods of time.
      • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds.
      • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
      • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but noise levels may increase during programs, events, or peak public service hours. Frequent interruption to planned work activities should be expected.
      • Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, noise or odors.
      • Incumbent will occasionally be asked to travel in a passenger vehicle.
  • TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGYAn employee in this position is expected to operate, learn, and adapt to the following tools and technologies:
    • Standard office and library equipment, including computers, printers, scanners, telephones, calculators, copiers, and cash drawers.
    • Library systems and software (e.g., Koha ILS, EnvisionWare, or similar applications).
    • Additional technology such as laminators, e-fax systems, self-check kiosks, or other department-specific devices.
    • May use technology and devices for programs such as projectors, tablets, gaming systems, STEM kits, 3D printers, Cricut, or virtual reality headsets.
    • New or emerging tools adopted by the library as services and programs expand.
    • Employees are expected to remain flexible and proactive in learning new technologies as they are implemented.
