POSITION SUMMARY:
The Resident Camp Director is responsible for managing the Summer Camp (Resident Camp) program under the safety regulations and guidelines of Girl Scouts of WNY, Girl Scouts of the USA, New York State Health Department and American Camp Association. He or she is responsible for the day-to-day operation and must be an organizer, administrator and educator for staff, campers, parents and visitors to camp. Actual salary will be based on applicant's experience
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for directing the day-to-day running of all camp operations and programming in accordance with the guidelines as set forth by GSWNY and GSUSA, and under the direction of the Sr. Director of Outdoor Program;
- Develop professional goals for the summer sessions that help support GSWNY's mission and goals, as well as meet all organizational, regulatory and state requirements;
- Assist the Sr. Director of Outdoor Program in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, training and supervising of all camp staff in accordance with GSUSA and GSWNY standards and policies as well as any applicable federal, state and local law(s);
- Communicate effectively and accurately with the Sr. Director of Outdoor Program on a regular basis throughout all stages (pre-planning, active camp sessions, and post-camp) of the Summer Camp process;
- Supervise director-level and administrative staff including but not limited to Assistant Camp Director(s), Administrative Assistant/Camp Business Manager, Store Manager, Media Director Head Cook, Health Supervisor, Waterfront Director & Riding Director.
- Works with the camp administrative team to develop and implement pre-camp training schedule;
- Provide opportunities for specialized staff training sessions including, but not limited to rabies, behavior management, child abuse recognition report training, risk management and New York State Health Department standards;
- Work with camp administrative team to ensure appropriate placement of unit staff;
- Willingness and ability to accurately and effectively prioritize needs of campers and staff
- With assistance of Chief Administrative Officer, maintain accurate and up-to-date staff personnel files;
- Motivate and encourage staff to plan, present, and maintain effective programs to ensure the campers' wellbeing, education, development and enjoyment;
- When necessary and in consultation with the Sr. Director of Outdoor Program, make adjustments in camp programming and staff assignments to assure smooth flow of camp operations;
- Work closely with Sr. Director of Outdoor Program on execution of GSWNY programs throughout all summer sessions;
- Complete forms and maintain records as necessary for the successful operation of camp;
- Conduct written performance evaluations for all direct reports at mid -season and end of season performance review periods;
- Be readily available to staff as needed to assist with problem solving, counseling, program execution and other needs that may arise throughout the summer camp season;
- Attend to any behavioral or professional misconduct amongst camp staff and work closely with Chief Administrative Officer to ensure speedy resolution, appropriate documentation and adherence to any and all GSWNY policies as well as any applicable federal, state and/or local law(s);
- Carry out sound and efficient processes and procedures in accordance with the Council's policies;
- Display sound judgement and model appropriate conduct and leadership for camp staff;\
- Administer the camp budget and control expenditures within the Council's framework;
- Ensure good public relations and provide friendly customer service to all campers, families, staff and visitors;
- Maintain a professional appearance in the camp community, while modeling responsible behavior for camp staff;
- Ensure accountability of all staff and adherence to Girl Scout standards and governing requirements for camp operations, including, but not limited to: GSUSA's Activity Checkpoints, New York State Department of Health and American Camp Association;
- Work with the V.P. of Outdoor & Property and property staff to coordinate and supervise the safe use of camp property and equipment;
- Oversee the development and practice of emergency drills and safety procedures in accordance with the NYSDOH guidelines requiring that emergency drills be conducted once-a-week;
- Work with camp administrative team to conduct nightly rounds of the camp property;
- Work with other members of the camp administrative team to coordinate and staff on-property coverage of the campsite(s) throughout the weekends while camp is in session. It is expected that this required weekend coverage will be a responsibility shared by all members of the camp administrative team, including the Resident Camp Director, to ensure that the site(s) is monitored at all times;
- Responsible for the safety and well-being of campers and staff;
- Assure that behavior management techniques are correctly applied to conflicts with children when necessary. Report incidents and accidents to supervisor immediately;
- Report suspected child abuse to supervisor immediately;
- Supervise and ensure appropriate measures are taken to close camp at the end of season;
- Attend to and complete all business and financial responsibilities, including any reporting duties; prior to the close of camp;
- Submit all required paperwork, including but not limited to health forms, staff files, camp director's binder, etc. to the Sr. Director of Outdoor Program on the last day of resident camp;
- Must adhere to requirement that Resident Camp Director be present on camp property during regular hours of operation (Sunday, 10:00 a.m. - Friday, 8:00 p.m.) throughout the summer camp season.

- Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become a registered member of GSUSA;
- Successfully pass the required background checks at hire and thereafter;
- Maintain reliable transportation to and from home and work;
- If travel is required, must possess a valid driver's license, meet minimum state auto insurance requirements, and meet the insurance carrier's requirements for coverage.
- Assist the campers in emergency situations.
- Lift 35 pounds.
- Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control and ability to adapt well to changing situations.
- Participate in structured and unstructured activities.
- Accept and follow directions both in verbal and written form.
- Successfully complete required background checks, as well as, submit Prospective Children's Camp Director Certified Statement form;
- Attend mandatory monthly camp director meetings as scheduled beginning in January through June;
- Attend mandatory supervisors weekend in May (date and time to be determined);
- Must attend mandatory administrative assistant & store manager training meeting in June (date and time to be determined) ;
- Must adhere to strict deadlines provided by the Director of Camp Administration;
- Assist the Director of Camp Administration in securing, coordinating and confirming staff attendance at the annual camp fair;
- Participate in all aspects of camp including pre-camp, open house and post camp;
- Attends staff meetings when scheduled/necessary;
- Display a willingness and capacity to abide by the policies and practices of the Girl Scouts of Western New York;
- Participate in structured and unstructured activities;
- Accept and follow directions both in verbal and written form;
- Accepts other responsibilities as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Director of Camp Administration and/or the Chief Outdoor/Property Officer
- Required to stay on the property during hours of operation (Sunday 10:00am to Friday 8:00pm)
- Must be willing to work in an outdoor setting and in inclement weather.
- Minimum age of 25 per NY State Department of Health regulations;
- Bachelor's degree is required; degree with emphasis in child care and/or education is preferred but not required;
- Minimum of three years of experience in an administrative, supervisory camp position;
- Background in child development, education, and/or related field is highly desired;
- Valid driver's license and ability to clear DMV background check;
- Demonstrated ability and supervisory experience;
- Successful completion of Certified Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check;
- Desire and ability to work with and relate to children and one's peers in an outdoor environment;
- Current certification in Responding to Emergencies and CPR; or willingness and ability to complete certification course prior to first day of camp season/during employee training sessions;
- Demonstrated facility in working with youth and children of all ages;
- Prior camp experience and/or interest in the Girl Scout camping program;
- Sound problem solving and decision making abilities;
- Capable of working with children and staff of all ages in a kind, cooperative and cordial manner;
- Ability to assist the campers and staff in emergency situations if necessary;
- Demonstrated ability to work well in stressful situations;
- Physically capable of working in an outdoor camp setting;
- Available and capable of working irregular work hours throughout camp season and as needed;
- Capable of lifting 35 pounds;
- The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a resident (overnight) camp.
GIRL SCOUT MEMBERSHIP:
All Employees of Girl Scouts must maintain an active, annual membership in Girl Scouts of Western New York. This membership must be renewed annually, and all newly hired employees are expected to enroll with GSWNY within the first 30 days of their employment.
