The Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) Department at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a PRT Electrician II.

About the Opportunity:

The Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit System (PRT) is an automated public transit system consisting of 73 driverless vehicles, 5 passenger stations, 2 maintenance facilities, 9 miles of dedicated guideway and a vast array of ancillary equipment. This position oversees and coordinates activities of workers engaged in repair and maintenance of PRT electrical systems. Responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems, vehicle light rail systems and its components. To accomplish the maintenance mission, this position works primarily midnight shift throughout the transit system, indoors and outdoors under various/extreme weather conditions. Because this is a safety sensitive position, it requires drug testing.

What you'll do:
  • Responsible for the correct application of electrical theory and principles in the testing, maintenance, and repair of transit system electrical components. Ensures proper operation and correct interpretation of test results using computers, digital and analog multi-meters, voltmeters and high voltage test equipment and specially designed transit system instruments and tools. Ensures that all work complies with National/Local electrical codes and that safe work practices are followed. Performs detailed scheduled maintenance inspections, troubleshooting, installation, and repairs to a variety of PRT installations and ancillary equipment and services such as: 120/240/277/480- and 23000-volt 3 phase power distribution systems; Lighting and lighting remote control devices; Remote monitoring and alarm devices; Electric motors, fans, generators, etc. PRT vehicle power collectors; PRT vehicle propulsion motors; 23000/575 volt substation testing and maintenance. Performs detailed scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and safety inspections to light rail system and components: Diagnosis, alignment, repair, and overhaul of light rail system as operated by the PRT; 575 volt 3 phase power distribution system and 40 remotely controlled breakers.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs 35 miles of power rail and rail heating system (includes 65 remotely controlled switching and overload protection devices.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous maintenance support activities necessary to support the overall maintenance mission, including: High voltage testing, and repair; Implements emergency response plans and actions for unplanned or emergency events; Routinely communicates with other PRT employees via handheld UHF radio to provide vital information. Participates in PRT vehicle recoveries and functions as a MOCU (Manual Override Control Unit) operator. Works in confined spaces. Interprets maintenance manuals, schematics, and drawings. Assesses task needs and organizes tools and materials to support efficient remote task accomplishment. Maintains assigned tools and is responsible for tool inventory. Responsible for assigned keys and the access they provide. Accounts for all man-hours and materials used in the performance of maintenance. As assigned, acts on the supervisor's behalf during the supervisor's absence. As assigned, monitors guideway heating system operation and supports other trades (mechanical and electronics). Orders electrical parts and equipment as necessary to accomplish repairs.

Hours: 10p-6am

Qualifications
  • Job requires broad trade knowledge or specific technical knowledge from a formal registered apprenticeship or vocational training program of up to 18 months beyond high school in the electrical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience involving:
    • Verifiable Journeyman level experience (preferred) in the installation, maintenance and repair of varied electrical systems and equipment.
    • Experience with high voltage and industrial or plant equipment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, hazards, and safety practices of the electrical systems trade including power measuring and troubleshooting equipment and electric codes.Ability to understand and quickly learn new (different) complex electrical equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to satisfactorily perform troubleshooting, detailed repairs, and maintenance procedures on a wide variety of complex electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques
  • Ability to operate particular boiler plant and guideway heating systems.
  • Due to system automation, the Electrician must be able to use electronic devices such as digital volt meters.
  • Ability to learn the theory and operation of the PRT vehicle air conditioning package.
  • Able to read and interpret complex hydraulic and pneumatic schematic diagrams.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, hazards, and safety practices of the mechanical systems trade including power hand tools and basic machine shop tools.
  • Knowledge in the techniques and operation for electrical and gas welding equipment.
  • Ability to qualify as a MOCU (Manual Override Control Unit) operator.
  • Ability to qualify as a PRT System Power Breaker Operator.
  • Able to read and interpret complex electrical diagrams.
  • Knowledge of current electrical codes and the use of current materials, methods, tools, hazards, and safety practices of the electrician trade.
  • Knowledge of the design, modification, and construction techniques for electrical equipment
Physical Demands:
  • Considerable physical demands include:
    • Bending, longs periods of standing, walking, bending, and climbing - Daily
    • Lifting materials over 75 pounds. - Daily
  • Periodically working in difficult/awkward positions and in confined spaces.
  • DOT background check.
  • Valid WV state electrical license (Journeyman) preferred.
  • Valid US driver's license required.
