The mission of the Department of Military is to provide a professional staff of Arkansas State Employees who help maintain and improve the readiness of Arkansas National Guard units through effective fiscal management of State Resources, Human Resource Management, and quality administration of Arkansas National Guard Programs.

Job Summary

The Ecologist Supervisor/Expert is the highest-level position within the ecologist job series, responsible for leading, directing, and overseeing complex ecological research, conservation planning, and environmental assessment programs within the State of Arkansas. This position provides expert-level guidance and technical support to ecological teams, government agencies, and stakeholders. The Supervisor/Expert ensures compliance with environmental laws and policies and plays a key role in developing and implementing statewide ecological strategies.

Primary Responsibilities

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency's operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of ecologists and environmental specialists in the design, implementation, and management of large-scale ecological projects. Develop, analyze, and manage statewide ecological monitoring programs, research initiatives, and conservation efforts. Provide expert consultation and recommendations on ecological restoration, habitat management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation strategies. Collaborate with state and federal agencies, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure effective ecosystem management and policy implementation. Review and approve ecological reports, assessments, and research findings, ensuring they meet scientific standards and regulatory requirements. Serve as a key spokesperson and represent the State of Arkansas in public forums, conferences, and meetings related to environmental issues. Stay informed on current and emerging ecological science, policies, and best practices, integrating these into the state’s programs.

Knowledge and Skills

Advanced understanding of ecology, environmental science, conservation biology, and related fields. Deep expertise in ecosystem management, ecological research methodologies, and environmental law and policy. Leadership and management of interdisciplinary teams, program development, and strategic planning. Strong technical skills in ecological data analysis, GIS, and environmental modeling. Ability to apply advanced ecological principles to real-world environmental challenges. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and educate diverse stakeholders. Ability to interpret and navigate complex state and federal environmental regulations and policies. Experience in program management, team leadership, and strategic planning. Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. At least three years of experience in ecological research, environmental conservation, or related work, including at least two years in a supervisory or expert-level capacity.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
