ABA Program Summary and Purpose
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behavior. It is rooted in the principles of behaviorism and focuses on improving specific behaviors while addressing socially significant issues. ABA programs are used to help individuals with various challenges, most notably in populations with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but also in a variety of other developmental, behavioral, and psychological conditions.
Purpose or Function of a Behavioral Technician (not yet registered):
The focus of the Behavior Technician is to provide direct one-on-one behavioral interventions to each communication, social and daily living skills and reduce problematic behaviors in home, community and school settings. Behavior Technicians will utilize interventions developed out of the science of Applied Behavior Analysis, which include:
- Skill Acquisition: ABA helps individuals learn important life skills, such as communication, social interaction, self-care, and academic skills.
- Behavior Reduction: ABA programs aim to reduce maladaptive or harmful behaviors (e.g., aggression, self-injury, tantrums) through systematic interventions.
- Independence & Autonomy: A key goal of ABA is to promote independence by teaching individuals how to perform tasks without assistance, leading to greater self-sufficiency.
- Improving Social Skills: ABA also teaches individuals how to interact appropriately with others, which can help build friendships, improve family relationships, and integrate into society.
- Empowering Caregivers and Educators: ABA programs also train family members, teachers, and other support staff to reinforce positive behaviors, manage difficult behaviors, and create supportive environments.
Positive Life BT Interns work unpaid internship over 7 days, while receiving 40 hours of RBT training. The training covers core competencies required for the RBT role and sets the individual up to achieve their registration.
The internship hours are Monday - Sunday from 9am to 5pm. It is recommended that the internship be completed within a 7 day period. And selected interns need to be available all 7 days.
The training covers the core competencies required for the RBT role, including the principles of ABA, data collection, behavior reduction, and skill acquisition strategies, all provided by PLLS.
After completing the 40-hour training, the candidate will undergo a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA (Board-Certified Behavior Analyst). This assessment tests practical skills in implementing ABA techniques acquired over the course of the internship.
Upon completion of the the Internship, and demonstration of proficient skills and competence, the BT may be offered a position with the condition of obtaining registration within 90 days of employment.
To express interest in our BT Intern Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Education
- Must have completed a High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Completion of Behavioral Technician (RBT) training program.
- Eligible for certification as Registered Behavioral Technician as issued by the BACB (Behavioral Analyst Certification Board).
- CPR/First Aid Certification highly preferred.
- At least 18 years of age
- Ability to pass a criminal background check to ensure eligibility to work with vulnerable populations.
- Willingness to Learn and Follow Protocols - The BT Intern MUST be open to learning and following specific protocols for behavioral intervention guided by supervising BCBA.
- Good communication and Interpersonal Skills - The BT Intern will frequently engage/interact with clients, families and supervisors, therefore, strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Patience and the ability to handle challenging behavior is also important.
