General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible technical and skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair replacement of machinery and equipment in thesewer pumping stations andwastewater treatment plants.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs journey level operations and mechanical work in the operation, maintenance and repair of large and specialized equipment and machinery in sewer pumping stations andwastewater treatment plants. Work involves responsibility for maintaining and repairing motors, chemical pumps, and related plant equipment. Work requires knowledge of trade skills in mechanical and plumbing areas. The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, exposure to chemicals fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation and oils. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision. Work is evaluated in terms of effectiveness in returning equipment to proper operating conditions within given time schedules, and overall effectiveness of system performance.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains and repairs pumps, motors and hydraulic systems and other apparatus and equipment.
Plans and participates in regular preventative maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings, gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, cleaning out wet wells, packing pumps, mowing and other preventative maintenance activities.
Assists with troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing parts or equipment due to failure.
Dismantles and overhauls various equipment; cleans, replaces and repairs gauges, grit collectors, grinders, pumps, diffusers, engines, and blowers.
Rebuilds and overhauls defective parts and machinery, instrumentation and equipment; maintains and services electrical generators for emergency power sources during outages.
Participates in ground, lawn and facility maintenance.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
igh School diploma or GED and five to seven years of experience in pump repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Ability to obtain Grade I WWC within one year of employment.
A valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License class B or the ability to obtain within 18 months of hire Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain with the Commercial Driver's License may also be required.
